Title: How to scrap a car?
Post by: jimbobmccoy on 18 July 2011, 07:47:08
Hi

I've read on here at various times that people scrap their omegas for around £300. Having never scrapped a car before I was wondering how this gets done?

I have had the pikeys knock on the door and offer £50 for it, but they did t take kindly to my offer to drive it up their arris's.

Does it matter I the car has been stripped or not?

It saddens me to be looking at this route but no one wants big cars anymore, and the mrs wants her drive back where it's been sat since the arrrival of a company car nearly 18 months ago.

Depends on how much you want to do...

You can strip the important bits off your car and place them on here if you've enough posts to do so.
Then when it's stripped, contact your local scrappy and have it weighed in.

Or you can just take it as is and weigh it in and walk away..

I just scrapped an Omega. Was offered £220 if I deliver or £190 if they collect.
I delivered and it had a few minor parts missing, they never even looked at the car just gave me a cheque and I handed over the keys and log bopk and it was done.

to scrap a car, I personally would remove anything valuable, stereo, seat covers, any tools, etc. and call someone who like purchasing scrap vehicles or take it to your local salvage yard.

Your'e a bit off m8 when you say people don't want big cars anymore. Truth is they want them but do not want to pay for them. They want the power and comfort and all the bells and whistl;es for what they think they can get away with by robbery.
Keep at it and be patient and you will probably sell it for near enough what you want. Try selling it on here or even fleabay - you would be surprised what some will pay for anything going. Failing that sell it for bits that you take off yourself and when thats done in just arrange for a scrappy to collect it from wherever it is. If they try to charge you just keep trying until someone will eventually do it for the scrap value they will get from a recycling yard.
Patience m8, you will win in the end and do the robbers out of an easy get! :y

Thanks for the replies.

I personally don't understand the lack of interest in big cars. The comfort and extras you get for such a low price now makes up for the extra petrol bills, but I guess not everyone shares my outlook.

I would strip it, but then have the issue of storing what I strip, which would go down as well as the car on the drive with the boss.
I haven't enough posts to sell on here and dont do eBay as it is more hassle than it's worth.
Just wanting it gone now I think a scrappy may be quickest/easiest.
I might take one of the front seats to make an office chair from, and if the admins don't mind me offering any other bits to members for free (not trying to sell, aware of post count), and then scrap the rest.
Whatever happens to it I need it gone in a fortnight!!
Has anyone any idea of how autotrader is for selling now?

The new V5's don't give you the option of 'scrapping' any car. They have to be recycled by a ........recycler :-?

id try it on ebay, is it moted? did it fail? autotrader isnt too bad for selling, but not sure about an omega.
when i replaced my lil fiat with omega i worked out how many miles i do with the "runarounds" and the differance in fuel costs, the extra a month, for a proper big comfy car with toys and a towbar is more then worth it!
i think ppl just see "more running costs" and dont work out the actual differance!

Tow it in and don't forget to fill the tank with water, 75 litres of water will weigh quite a bit  ;D

The problem with these little scams is - you cant use the same scrapyard twice. ::)

Hmmmm, the sand and water Is an interesting idea, but knowing my luck they'd check.
Also, do they not have a guide of what wright of metal they get from each make of car and just use that? If not then I guess leaving the seats and all else in would bump up the cost too?
I was thinking "hmmm, I could take the stuffing out of the seats and fill the space with something heavy, like say, lead, or iron" but then realised I wasn't blonde, and the scrappys Christmas is the 25th December like everyone else's.
