Post by: ninjapirate on 17 July 2011, 23:09:53

for some reason i bought two of their fly killer zappy things. they are crap.
a fly sat happily on the wall next to it for a while, then decided to go in for a closer look and get a tan, and has just buggerd off out again. only 2 flies have been killed between them lol

Unfortunately neither house flys or blue bottles are attracted to UV light :(. You may find that your fly killers have a bit more success with wasps very soon though :y

All light and UV light in particular does attract all flying insects as my electronic fly killer demonstrates. I do admit that mine is a commercial 30 watt model though and cost me £30.00 but it it does the job brilliantly.
I too have tried the cheaper low wattage types and they are all total sh*te! The battery operated ones are even worse.
To be effective the unit must emit more UV light than daylight or there is no attraction quality. They will work in the dark, but in daylight forget it!
At the end of the day you get what you pay for, pay a little and you cannot expect to get a top quality product you can rely on.
To complicate matters the tubes have to be changed each year too because their emmission of UV diminishes over a period of time.
I got mine off Ebay 3 years ago and it still works just as it should. Its lovely to hear the bang as they hit the grids. bzzzzzzzz  ::), bang :o, silence, ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Get yourself one and be happy ;)

To reply to the OP.  In "the good old days" I used to buy from Maplins and buy their catalogue every year to see what new components (especially semiconductors) I could build into something fiendish.  Sadly, the pull of the mass-market has taken them down the route they currently pursue, and they have been expanding, no less.

There is very little I would buy from them on reputation now.  Only stuff that I already know is trustworthy.

I get a similar feel from CPC with the constant barrage of booklets offering tat that is WAY off what I'm interested in.  Fortunately they do still sell the quality components and deliver them very fast.

it was a random buy really, i went in for something else but they flies have been doing me nut in for ages lol
(typicly its been cold and raining since)
they are only 4watt i will look for a decent one off ebay and replace the bulbs. lots of flies is just a part of living here, im totaly surounded by countryside and farmland, i and two other neighbours keep chickens too. but they anouy the crap out of me lol so they must die.

with maplins, the stuff i normaly go in for is ok, just small electrical bits and bobs, but i somehow always think "ahh thats what i need, i need one of them" and buy some random crap lol  ;D  which doesnt work and i either have to take back or it sits in the workshop til i throw it out

After a week of camping I've discovered a great fly killer.

They just fly up inside the globe, do about a lap and a half of the mantel and then drop dead. :y

We bought a bug zapper on offer here in Spain. Normal price 11 euros offer 5.

It worked great for two weeks then it got knocked and the blue bulb went. I have hawked the dud bulb from shop to shop and failed to get a replacement. Have had a few laughs though when I produce the carrot sized bulb with a flourish!  ;D ;D
