Title: Insurance recommendations please
Post by: twiglet on 21 July 2011, 10:59:27
Just had my Admiral multicar renewal through, and it's gone through the roof!!!

Looking for suggestions for sensible quotes from reputable companies please. I need to insure my mig, my diesel cavalier and SWMBO's Hyundai Getz.

Also interested in whether it would be cheaper to get a trader's policy, and what I would need to do to qualify...

TIA  :y

This is worrying as I have Admiral Multicar plus my wife just rear ended a 3 day old Audi Quattro Sport - we have protected no claims but I am sure there will be consequences on renewal.

protected no claims is just that...

ie
current premium based on low risk : £1000
70% ncd brings it to £300

new premium based on high risk £2000
still have your 70% NCD luckily...
so goes up to £600

obviously made up figures.... but the NCD is worth having even if you premium does go up, massivel reduces the rocket.

Seems obvious but have you tried all the comparison sites?

confused.com
moneysupermarket
comparethemarket
gocompare
tiger
tescocompare
uswitch

If you can get cheaper quotes you can use it as a bargaining tool with Admiral.

Also, have a look here:

I had exactly the same with Admiral Multicar in February, they wanted £3547 for our 2 cars - my Miggy & SWMBO's Ford Focus.  :D :D :D I nearly had a hearts attack when I read the renewal.

I then started surfing Comparethemeercatinsurancesupermarket.com. 40 mins or so later, guess what???? The exact same details entered as on my renewal got the quote down to £1600 :) :) :)
Whats more it was with the same bloody company >:( >:( >:( . So armed with this I rang Admiral, who said "You must have got something wrong or missed something out" So I gave them the Ref. nos. for the quotes & they looked, then came the answer "Oh! those quotes are for NEW customers!!!"  >:( >:( >:(
After a bit of arguing and stating the obvious (Retaining current customer business) they relented. Still a bit steep for 2 cars but next year I'll be looking at Trade insurance. Thieving Barstewards!!!!!!!!

I spent a day gocomparing the meerkats when my renewal came in. Wife then insisted I get a quote from Norwich Union - as they arent on the comparison sites. To my amazement they were the cheapest by quite a margin.

What kind of money is your trader policy costing a year? What do you have to do to qualify for one? Which companies offer it?  :-/

i had the same last year, phoned company(swift cover) was told by lovely lady that if i used the comparison web site (broker) i would be classed as new customer :y
as most ins companies offer big discounts to get you on there books via brokers  ;) ;) so a bit of inside info from what I was told  try all the comparison site as each one have different deals with each company

I assumed that would be the case, but I've always bought/sold and worked on cars on a part-time basis. I'm just wondering whether that would be enough to qualify for trade insurance, or what I would have to do to qualify?

If I'm being rediculous, just tell me!  :D :y

You can be a part time trader ;) ;)

I'm looking at a few options myself, one being some form of motor trading again... Probably a bit of breaking, LPG conversions and general servicing :-/ A lot depends on whether I can get redeployment at work ;)

Cheers for all the suggestions guys!  :y

I'm waiting to hear back for a couple of the trade insurers, but in the mean time I've had a quote off Aviva..

Admiral multicar... £1139  :o  Aviva (with slightly better cover)... £747!!  8-) ;D :y

None of the comparison site could come close, and neither could Admiral when I phoned them back!

It's taken most of the day and I suspect I'll have to do all this again next year, but 400 quid is some saving!!

Pub tonight I think!!  8-) :y
