Title: Washing machines! Arghh!
Post by: Kate on 20 July 2011, 16:28:18
Does anyone know anything about washing machines?  Mine stopped working a couple of weeks ago and I can't afford a new one. :'(

It's getting quite bad now as I'm having to wear all my old clothes and none of them match and some are from the eighties! ;D ;D ;D

Anyway, it's an indesit WG1285W and it switches on but the programs won't start.  I thought it might be the door interlock as the light nevers comes on to say it is locked.

Anybody got any ideas?

I think I might get arrested soon for crimes to fashion!

If the light doesn't come on to say the door is closed your possibly right. There is a micro-switch which is in a similar way (like the little button in the corner of a car door which turns off the interior light) I'm not sure how they actually operate on that model, but have a look around the door and the locking pin area (bit where the door secures to the machine) & see if anything has broken / fell off. If the mechanism is faulty may need to take front off to repair it though.

The old Electra machines were a pain for that happenin!!

I took the switch out and it looks ok.  Is there anyway to test it?

Also, tried switching the machine off for 24 hours, still no luck.

I'm getting desperate now. Been gardening in this get up!

The door lock is a bi metal strip on that and it needs to energise, you will have three wires on it can't remember if brown and red but short the two outside wires together that should bypass it,
sounds like the door lock, if you can post a picture it will jog my memory,
I have been an appliance engineer for 30 years but been out of it for five now,

Should I short out the ones on the left or right.  Is it safe to do this with the machine powered on?

Terminals 2 & 3 get joined (based on Russ's answer).

There are old electricians, and there are bold electricians.....however there are no old & bold electricians  ;)

(In other words, unless you are feeling incredibly stupid then short the wires with the power off and then switch it on when your pinkies are well out of the way)

Indeed - based on the electrical rating and wires I reckon that's switching 220V AC.. that'd make your hair stand on end if it went wrong! (I speak from experience..  ;D)

[edit] And who'd have thought a thread about washing machines could contain so many pictures of pure unadulterated sex.. I mean.. wait.. what?

So do you mean the left, middle or right wires?

I've been electrocuted before! ;D ;D ;D

My friend Gill reckons it's the four outer wires.  I'm trying to decide if it's red to red and brown to brown.

This is like Die Hard 2!

join the two outer wires leaving the middle, something else to try is your machine has a double pole on/off switch it may be that one side has gone down quite common on this model, the on lamp will light but it is only a neon so don't get confused as a neon can still light with a low feedback it isn't the same as a normal bulb,
TURN THE MACHINE OF FROM THE PLUG BEFORE CONNECTING THE DOOR LOCK WIRES.!!!!!! Have to say these door locks are very reliable unlike other makes so it may not be that.

Well I gave it a try but nothing happened. The door lock light came on but that was it.

Fortunately though I have bought a washer off ebay for £20 so that should do me for now.  No more weird outfits!! ;D

Thanks a lot for all your help! :y

What's wrong with a washboard and scrubbing brush? Women have it too easy these days. The reason they are so obese is because they don't do any housework or proper washing and step-scrubbing these days.
They should also walk to the supermarket and return with at least three heavy shopping bags, before turning the contents of these bags into a wholesome meal for hard-working husband. :y

I don't believe it.  Got my 'new' washing machine, switched it on and there was a really loud bang accompanied by a bright blue flash!! :o :o :o :'(

When I took the old machine out I noticed that the water pipe was kinked so no water could get in.  All it needed was a new door interlock! ::)

It's a Zanussi Jetsystem 1200.  I think moisture might have got into the circuit board, hence the blue flash and bang.

Will it be useless now?

I've got the Zanussi to switch on now but the programs don't seem quite right.

Is there anything I can do?
