Title: hlp pls with my P4, can't get RJ45 to work
Post by: Varche on 20 July 2011, 13:04:19
paging cem or The Boy or indeed anyone else.

I bought a S/H ASROCK 775i65GV and stuck that in my old computer. Downloaded the drivers from here mhttp://www.asrock.com/MB/download.asp?Model=775i65GVy

It works but I cannot get the LAN to work and thus Internet. Tried both the onboard and installing a realtek card. Both are "there" but in advanced it says "WMI info may be corrupted" Go back to an earlier restore point. haven't got one. Fishing around on the net it suggests a problem with BIOS. On the Asrock website there are quite a few BIOS updates. Not at all sure how to or which one to update as can only save via a USB stick on another computer and it suggests not updating BIOS while computer is running?

In Device manager everything is fine except yellow exclamation marks against.

"Other devices two unknown devices"
"Microsoft system management BIOS driver"
Inside USB controllers "unknown device

Thanks in anticipation

get into the bios (del,F2,F10 etc) and check on board network enabled or not.. while you are in there disable com2 and if you are using a usb printer (not parallel) disable paralel port..  so they will not use system IRQS.. and if possible (if it shows) check IRQ assignments..  some pci slots share the irqs and some with sound etc..

if you have installed a tv card or some other stuff discard them for a while..

I estimate you dont have the correct drivers..

if you will use pci type netwok card, disable the on board one..

and be sure to use a known working cable..  :y

ps: yellow exclamations say you didnt install a driver properly..

That error message means you haven't installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard, and if you haven't installed those I suspect you haven't installed any of the other (correct) drivers either.

All of the system drivers relating to that board can be obtained from http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=775i65GV&o=All

I wouldn't expect an out of date BIOS to cause the onboard NIC to not work, but if you are going to update it then the latest version available is 2.40 (dated 9/12/2006) and it has to be updated in true DOS mode (so you'll need a bootable DOS disk).

yep.. agreed.. but before messing with bios -which can make things more complex if things go wrong- I would try better drivers first..

Re installed all the drivers and it improved things, less items with yellow. The MSM Bios driver iyellow flag is  still there.

Not too keen on bootable bios as a fix but hey why not. I removed the floppy disc drives but have access to a DVDwriter so maybe could create a bootable disc for that. Can't do anything more now till Thursday evening.

Ye gods.

Good news. No yellow marks against anything now in device manager.
Bad news . Still can't get onboard LAN or a PCI ethernet card to work.

Problem is in network properties, advanced. It says WMI info might be corrupted.

Rhetorical question . What good is a PC that you can't network or connect to the Internet? This is what comes of doing a 1000 hour repair with your 1000 year old XP Pro disc pre service packs. Maybe I should buy XP home?

I'm a bit(well a lot) fed up  :'( :'( :'( but open to relevant suggestions.! paging cem, Martian or any other helpful souls.

Cem - no none of them have worked since the new Moboard went in.

I have had a look at the link and will give it a try. I think I might struggle with the slipstream repair. A bit like a blind man could do brain surgery with a spoon. Possible but likely to fail.

I think if after that it still doesn't work then a fresh install with XP home or possibly Vista is in order then I will have all the service packs.

Thanks for the help. :y

if its still faulty after all this work,

a visit to second hand shops may solve the problem imo.. :-/
