Title: MPG Question.
Post by: Amigo on 23 July 2011, 23:52:47
I've just done 632 miles on about £120 of petrol. Could one of the wiser with figures among us give me a rough estimate of overall MPG please?
   Thanks, Guy. :y

If my calculations are correct after 7 cans, I'd say about 31.6 mpg

Yep. :y...............slightly surprised tbh. I thought an MX5 would have been higher than that. :-/

Ours does about 38 MPG on a run. Probably low 30's around town, and considerably less bouncing off the rev limiter trying to keep up with a group of kit cars. ::)

That's a Mk 2 1.8.

Evening Kevin. Mine's a late (97P) Mk1 UK 1800 3 owner car, just turned 101k. 99k when i bought her a few weeks ago but what with Mum leaving us she's been shuttling from N.E Lincs to W Sx without missing a beat, totally dependable little motor. When i bought i her saw a newish oil filter, dipped the oil which was up to the mark & golden. Still is now, has'nt dropped or turned black, even the water level is the same. 6 months T&T, new Pirelli P6s all round, plenty of history, last owner 9 years, he paid £7600. £995 on ebay.

I could probably get better mpg with the roof up & the lights down but by thier nature the do encourage spirited driving. They're just so cheeky & playful, you almost feel they've got a grin on thier little faces so 30+ mpg is'nt too bad. 8-)

Yep, ours is a 2000 model on about 130k now and, as you say, totally dependable. Only thing it's had apart from servicing is a coil pack. Pirellis seem to work well on the MX5, and last well too.

Ours does need a top up occasionally (once or twice between services) so worth keeping an eye on the oil. Other than that just drive it. 8-)

Took it on a kit car tour in the spring so it had its' work cut out keeping up,  and got thrashed well as a result. ::) It loved it.

Indeed they could never keep up with a good kit car, i used to have a tired Dutton Phaeton that ran a 1300GT x flow MANY years ago but even then would out handle an MX but it was very noisy & harsh, raw fun.

MX5's get an undeservedly bad press from those who jump on the hairdresser joke bandwagon but this is usually by those who've never driven one & don't realize how much fun they are to drive.

I can live with that. Let them get on with it, what do they know? 8-) :y

Had a 1.8 about 10 years ago.  Great fun.  :y Somewhat 'tail happy' in the wet though.

I went to see an MX5 that was advertised as going through my local auctions. I  couldn't believe my eyes when I got there, it was a rare R Limited and totally rust free so I stayed and had a bid. I ended up paying £800 for it and planned to sell it for an easy £2000, thats until my wife saw it and decided she was going to keep it and I could have her £500 Rover 25 Diesel to sell. Must admit, i'm glad its staying, once i've poly bushed the suspension and done a few more tweaks it will be brilliant to drive ;)

Thats because it is a car for ladys and ladyboys.  But girls' cars can be fun too ;D

A mate of mine has a Robin Hood with 1500 Dolomite running gear and we had a good joust on a few occasions. Pretty evenly matched, I think. I could see him clenching on a few bends that I was happy with, and vice versa a few times. The MX handled bumpy surfaces and high speed cornering much better, and had better overtaking power, but a few of the tight twisties saw him getting his own back.

Agreed. There are more girly cars than the MX that I would never be seen dead in. BMW Mini anyone? especially the convertible. New shape beetle? FFS that has a flower vase built into the dashboard. - er.. apparently.

Interesting you say that. I find ours needs serious provocation before it "misbehaves".  [smiley=evil.gif]

Indeed. If it lets go on you you're either being silly or not driving it properly. Equally they will outbrake almost anything on approach to bends/roundabouts without abs, take said bend/r'bout & flick you out the other side like a fairground ride.

Not everyones cup of tea i know but they are a car for the driver not the motorist! 8-)

Just a shame I annoyed my neighbour by outbreaking him into a junction, then beating him home (about 15miles).  I think what annoyed him more was I was in a Rover, and could outbreak him, outcorner him, and he didn't quite have the acceleration to get past until the dual carriageway, but lost it all again on the sequence of roundabouts.

He took a keener interest in the Rover after that ::)

I'm guessing he had poor tyres, as judging by the squealing, they were struggling... ...or the combination is too easy to overcook.

This must be something to do with your neighbour's driving skills....or complete lack of! :o
