Post by: cam2502 on 26 July 2011, 19:13:55
thinking of buying a driving day experience for the other halfs birthday. has anyone ever had one of these experiences and if so what do you think?  what kind of cars are there? im guessing ferrari, lambo, porche? what cars would you recommend if you have done it?
looking to spend no more than £150.
im just north of carlisle so where would the best place to go be?

A previous Mrs Opti bought me one for a birthday present in about 1988/9 ish at Mallory park.

It was great fun. The cars consisted of a Formula Ford single seater....Golf GTI 1.8....and a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4

Did a track day last year at the three sisters track at Wigan. It was suppost to be in a Porshe, But due to the fact that someone had hung it on the crash barrier the day before I got a free upgrade to an Aston Martin Vantage. I wasn't that impressed with the performance though and I'm sure it had been de- tuned. It  didn't seem much quicker than my Mig to be honest. If you decide to go for it try and choose the longest track you can. Three sister is quite short and doesn't give you much of a chance to stretch the cars legs. That said though I still managed to squeeze 90 MPH on the very short straight which made the guy who was sat next to me tense up a little a go a funny colour 8-) ::)

Think I'd be wanting to hit more than 90 on a track day! ::) And I've heard other people say that they didn't get the performance they expected too.  Wonder if the cars are toned down for joe public?

50 M.P.H is the limit for the smaller-brained female  ;) Especially when you take into account the lack of spatial awareness that all girlies seem to have.... ::) :P

It was a general wonder Tony, not just taking into account your ''de-tuned'' one experience!  ;) Might be a girlie but know my way round a car hun! ;) :y

Right! That'll explain why I get all distracted and feel the need crash into things, whilst checking my hair and make up, at anything over 50 then.  Heaven forbid I ever manage to get it in a parking space! ;D ;D :P

And I do wonder how I ever went anywhere without getting lost before I had satnav to save me struggling to read a map! :y

See Brands Hatch leisure web site. They have several circuits, thinking Bedford aerodrome. I suspect you'll need to travel to get a decent length track from up there...? But they cater well for beginners(?).

Don't expect a much of a motor for that money though. Plus deposit.  :-/

SWMBO bought me a track day sort of thing in an Aston Martin...  abso-bloody-lutely brilliant... only 4 laps butamazing ... as the instructor said .... the better you drive it the shorter the time .. which was the only downside...

When else would I get the chance to drive a 2010 AM Vantage ... with me right foot buried in the very plush carpets..  ? .. :)

She organised the whole event through "6th Gear Experience"

http://www.6thgearexperience.com

who use several locations .. I went to "Prodrive" in Kenilworth

There are several other companies who do similar packages ... I got SWTSMBO a TVR day at Bruntingthorpe through Drivers Dream Days

A colleague was given a 'Ferrari experience' for his birthday. He was rather disappointed overall. A few tuition laps, then he got to drive for a few laps and then it was all over. An hour and a half at most, and a fair bit of that was talk and instruction.
Obviously this is just one example, so maybe (hopefully) others are better.
