my son purchased a clock for his fiesta off a seller, after buying the clock was completely different from the description, he cancelled, they took his money and cant get it back. after an hr on the phone to e bay they have now suspended there account due to umpteen complaints over fraudulant sales and furious buyers. this is why i dont use them after the crap i got on my first buy. e bay have just this second back and paypal have credited him the money he paid :y

i was suspended in 2002 for refusing to pay a 30 postage for a £2.50 item when the original postage was £8. they stuck with him after i complained and i got suspended. i will never buy off there again anyway but its wrong the way the side with the seller when hes on a con

as above i have done over 300 deals on ebay, never a problem. bought 7 cars and sold 5. the one thing people must check is the sellers feedback score and %age rating, if there has been bad feedback...avoid.

she had a very good feedback as he wouldnt of bought, hes pretty clued up on most things now. so hopefully she'll think twice now if they let her back on again.

I just bought two parts from Ebay in the last week. No problems at all, parts exactly as described and rapid delivery, car now fixed. I've never encountered a problem either buying or selling on Ebay in five years.
In fact, the worst rogue traders I have ever encountered were Vauxhall Main Stealers who lied straight to my face while they took money from me for work they simply hadn't done. (I proved it and eventually got a refund).
The point is, that its not just Ebay, its "caveat emptor" wherever you shop.

Same here, but as others have said there are a few horror stories around :( I work on the principal of can I afford to loose the money if it does not work out ::) I tend to buy a lot of mundane items though, including make up and fish food, but tend to use the same companies, but have bought and sold a huge variety of items over about 5 years......

I think you other thing you need to know when dealing with ebay is how much is the retail price of an item, it is easy to get carried away with lap top purchasing.....

Touch wood, I've never had a problem with ebay, always had good service and items as described.
A couple of times looked at things from China that seemed to good to be true, so I waited to see what would happen and on both occasions, both adverts were pulled.
I always look at the number of items sold and feedback, but it does not guard against an account being hijacked.
Was ripped off just after I bought miggy by Vx stealer £60 to change key battery and reprogram key!!!! :o :o :o
Never went back there and have always changed key batteries myself since then.
In business I never rip anybody off as you not only lose the customer, but also 10 of their friends and family, plus what price do you put on having a good reputation and repeat business and recommendation is always cheaper than having to find new customers.

Even that has been removed, you cant leavenegative feedback for a bad experience, >:( you have to resolve it with the seller, even after that you can only leave neutral feedback!! >:(

My rules are simple.
I look at the cost of the item with any add ons that are hidden in the small print elsewhere (terms and conditions) like insurance and vat.
I look carefully at the postal charges and everything related to it.
I look at where the item is being dispatched from and the method of carriage. Can it be tracked for instance.
I look and see if they accept returns, and the policy for returning them.
I look to see if the transaction is under the protection of Ebay and PayPal if that method is used for payment. Ebay own PayPal don't forget.
Lastly I check the physical address details of the seller and make certain that the postcode is valid and the telephone number works. If its a mobile number I will not buy. If they say they will get back to me with an answer to a question in so many days I will not buy.
I always send a test email too and check its delivery route nby using the properties function in the returned reply.
I have done this now for years and since I stared doing it all of by buys have gone without problems.
Lastly, do not give feedback until you have received and fully tested the goods. I will not buy either if the policy of the seller is to only give feedback once I have left mine for them - it usually states that they want a 5 star one and they will then do the same in return. That is blackmail and high time that Ebay stopped the sellers from doing it!
Ebay is as safe to use as the user makes it. It as easy as that sadly. Everyone wants a bargain, it just makes it more important to take care or the bargain is then a rip off that has cost dearly..... :D

I've had mixed experience on EBay but on the whole, it's great for grabbing a bargain. As for selling, I'd do this over a car boot sale any day!!!

It has its advantages, but as a general rule of thumb I never buy anything off ebay that I wouldnt be prepared to buy off a pikey in the local pub as either way you get the same guarantee!
Electricals are usually a no no for me as its all too easy for selers to sell something which doesnt work "it worked when I sent it" sort of thing, but I have bought a couple of s/h car stereo's in the past.
Sold a couple of cars on there recently too without issue, but I did go to see an omega nearly 100 miles away (as mentioned in another thread0 to find it was nothing like the impression given in the ad.
