I used to have, before my PC went pop, a nice piece of software that when I uploaded to Email a photo or two they were automatically reduced in size.
Have searched the web for it or a replacement. Anyone know what it was or have a suggestion please for suitable piece of free software?

What mail client are you using?
Outlook Express, Outlook, and Windows Live Mail all do this by default if the user allows it.

Hotmail.

do you really need to shrink a photo if they are sent as a jpeg file as they are small anyway

Not necessarily, the actual data size of a jpg/jpeg wil depend on the amount of compression used when first creating the file.

Yep, and if you start off with an 18megapixel file straight out of the camera, It'll be huge whatever happens. :y
I use the imagemagick tools under Linux, although they are available for windows too, but then I prefer to do things by command line. Call me a luddite, if you like.
