happened to pick up a copy of the telegraph in the canteen yesterday and whilst the front pages followed every other paper in being outraged a lot of the inner ones seemed devoted to finding the causes of he riots. Seemed to be a lot about "parallel society", the fact that the looters didnt feel they "belonged" to their communities hence they didnt care about trashing them, and also about the looters being on the povertyline with no prospects of a job or getting on the housing ladder so they only broke into Comet to steal goods they could never be able to afford themselves. Hmm. Now Im prepared to believe that some of these people may fall into some or even all of these catergories but mostly, mostly, Id say they were just little scrotes just jumping on the bandwagon. Come on, look at the photos, they arent exactly dressed in rags and do they honestly expect us to believe that most of them havent got a topline mobile phone or an HD tv or a PS3? Trust me ,having those things seems easier for the unemployed "disenfranchised" youth than it does for many of us who work and struggle to pay the bills. Im fortunate, I dont live in an inner city but I do know of people who do and I do understand a little about street/gang culture and the reasons behind it including poverty/drugs/racism/lack of opportunities. Similar things happened in the 80s-with probably more justification in terms of all these things. Of course the shooting of Mr Duggan wasnt the cause, it was the catalyst maybe and the underlying causes were undoubtedly there for some time and must be addressed but in the meantime this loutish behaviour should be dealt with both swiftly and harshly.
pps did you hear about Spurs' new black Italian signing? fella by the name of Grabatelli ::)

Excuses for looting - there are none.
Reasons for looting - greed.
Lack of jobs - no shortage of jobs in London, never really has been, and probably never will be.
Deprivation - people in Africa die from a lack of food or clean drinking water, thats deprivation. Not having the latest Nike trainers or a 56" flat screen tv isnt.

A 2nd world war veterran called a radio station today & pointed out that at the end of WW2 food was still rationed for some time so despite being in peacetime folk had to eke out what little they had & make do.
Nobody rioted, everyone shared what little they had.
Why have we gone so far wrong?

It might be something to do with the sense of entitlement a lot of people seem to have these days. If they want it they think they are entitled to have it. Working and saving to pay for it - thats old fashioned crap for mugs like us.

Do you know the story of Al Capone..
somewhere I read/ heard a story belonging to his childhood.. he wanted a bicycle as a kid.. and prayed god everyday.. but still couldnt have it.. so one day he thought, may be god works in a different way..
he stole one bicycle.. and later prayed and excused ;D ;D

I think the "lack of jobs and opportunities" excuse has been blown apart today.
Those appearing in court on charges of rioting and looting included - a primary school teaching mentor, an Army recruit,a graphic designer, a university student, etc.etc......... ::)
-
imo a real investigation must include their bank accounts and how much they have ::)

Imo Melanie Phillips has understood the resons very well indeed.

I think she hits the nail on the head. Now is the time for the government to get some balls, and put right the wrongs of liberalism :y

Spot on, Cleggy. Sadly, balls seem to be in short supply in Westminster. ::) >:(

>:(I am fortunate to have a decent job, the downside is i deal with this type of "scrote" every day & to understand them you need to be able to think like them, the minute cuts to the police budgets were announced several if not all of us knew the "scrotes" would see it as a victory. That announcement is telling them we have given up we in fact have lost control & yes nobody in power has the balls to do anything about it , as i see it we have lost a very good chance to begin to sort things out, water cannons with dye should have been brought out immediatley & rubber bullets should have been used in fact the only thing that stopped it was the rain!! The goverment has done nothing they are too cocconed from reality, i can tell you the "scrotes" are now thinking we got away with that it was easy when can we do it again? Excuse my rant but lots of people have their "heads in the sand" this is not a race or deprivation issue it is what is happening & the powers that be must start to recognise it now because nothing has been done.

I think that just about covers it word for word.
