Title: Kissing as a form of greeting
Post by: Nickbat on 11 August 2011, 15:26:51
A society in Germany which advises on etiquette and social behaviour has called for kissing to be banned in the workplace.

The Knigge Society says the practice of greeting colleagues and business partners with a kiss on the cheek is uncomfortable for many Germans.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14487415

Whilst "banning" is mentioned in the headline, the group actually says it cannot forbid the practice but rather help those who do not wish to be kissed.

Which brings me on to the subject in general. Do people on here like to kiss/be kissed as a form of greeting? Personally, I can't stand it, but when you meet people from other cultures, they seem to go for it!! First time it happened to me was an unwelcome shock - especially as it was from a him, not a her!   >:( ;)  :-[ ;D

Blimey. You wouldn't last five minutes in Spain Nick. Meet a family even thoiugh you have met them earlier in the day. Shake hands with all the men and kiss each female on left cheek and then right cheek.

Only men to men kissing is by close family members e.g. cousin, uncle son father.

Could be worse you could be in France with all their French kissing. :-[ :-[

Having spent several years living in France I am comfortable with it, even my very close male friends get 'La Bise' as they are considered as brothers.

However, to begin with it was a little wierd and it probably isnt everyone's cup of tea.  Then again I know of one mod who would love to see it in regular use over here so he can snog loads of men  ::)

Having spent quite a lot of time in the workplace in Germany I can report that you have to know them pretty well before they are comfortable with being called by their christian names, let alone a peck on the cheek. ;D

Indeed - Germany, the land of the surname, seems an odd place to spawn a "No kissing as a greeting" group! That kind of thing would probably get you a kick in the groin from most colleagues in Germany ;D

Personally I'm fine with it with women I know at least reasonably well, and fine with it for a few close male friends, but it's always a little odd when a complete stranger goes for it ;D

Most action I get, though, so.. beggars can't be choosers  :D

Kissing Mrs Opti's best friend is fine by me. If I'm subtle, I can also give her bum a little squeeze without getting my face slapped. ::) ::) ;)

I think a hug & a polite kiss on the cheek is acceptable between opposite sexes. If for any reason either party is'nt comfortable they can easily & politely not kiss & touch cheeks...letching old blokes..& letching old women but it's a polite way out.

Sorry, someone else wrote this when i was'nt looking. I think girls should full on tongue snog at every opportunity & men should kiss girls on the botty cheek!!!! :-* 8-)

I was always worried she was going to slip the tongue in.... :o :o :o

Tend to agree with the ban tbh. well not a ban as such but a clarification of what's polite. There will be no kissing of men here. But continental women, I never know if it's a one peck, or peck both sides. Some get upset if it's one...

Having said that. Meeting women at work, seems odd shaking hands, but kissing seems ott...

What's considered polite?

Sorry to be slightly off topic here. But I am quite concerned when I see parents kissing their children on the lips.

Does anyone else find this troubling, or am I being stupid/idiotic/etc.

I ask as the last time I saw it was a father kissing his 9 year old daughter on the lips. Yes closed mouths, but  :-[
