Up my Nanna's on Sunday Morning, when conversation got around to the Riots plus the youth of today etc
My Nanna thinks that "National Service would do them good. It is hard enough bringing children up with two parents, most of todays children are brought up with one, and so the discipline is difficult and often out of the window. National Service would each them respect as you have to do as your told."
Is she right?
What are the chances of that happening?
-
i wouldnt of thought the armed forces would want to waste there time on todays scumbags, i think it would make them more aggresive when they did there time, they would think they were harder then
-
What are the chances of that happening? :-[NONE :-[ cos the liberal limpwristed yoghurt knitters will start bleating it contravenes the poor little lambs "uman rights". If they want riot and fight book them on the 1st herky bird from Brize Norton and fly them to Helmand province :y :y
-
Not sure it would work with todays armed forces, its a little more pink and fluffy compared with olde years.....
-
hi daz hows it going?
i dont think it would work. say for arguments' sake im 16 and im due to do National Service. So are my mates bob, jim, john, paul, george and ringo ;D
pun aside...... then i see ishvaq, imran and abdul ''opting out'' due to religious reasons and/or human rights and/or not being ''british''.
....you get my point.......?

Most military service is far to specialised and technical to entrust to conscripts. In the days of "canon fodder" when a "grunt" just had to carry a rifle and rounds then "National Service" of physical activity and discipline had its place.
No longer applies IMHO
There would also be major problems enforcing discipline ... as when NS existed most folks respected authority to some extent .. again .. that is no longer the case.
Can you imagine the outcry when the first "conscript" got taken around the back of the hanger for a "quiet word" after refusing an order ???
Won't and shouldn't happen, those who have joined for the right reasons do not deserve to have to put up with the dregs they would have to work with.

i think you have summed it up perfectly mr entwood

IF the forces are allowed to enforce the necessary discipline, so sadly missing from this daft 'modern parenting' and schooling, it could have some benefit. But it will never happen.
When the worse that happens to misbehaving brats is 5 mins on a naughty step, well, I'm just the stupid kid from the local comprehensive, but I could see this coming... :-/

But does "national service" mean the armed forces ? I am led to believe in other coutries where it is the norm that it can me doing things for the nation.
I have allway said we have should have attendance centres for people claiming unemplyment benefit. For example a large old office or factory where they have to attend 5 days a week from 8 till 5 to receive their benefit. This would get rid of those false claims and for the others it might be more worthwhile to do a proper job.
Just my useless 2p worth.

Totally agree with you, except I would make them spend all day every day applying for jobs, until they have got one. :y

Other European countries do exactly that. Can't see it working in Britain. Somewhat lacking in community spirit or Big Society - call it what you will. people would be "ashamed" to be seen clearing ditches, painting the village hall or town bridge. etc

I tend to roughly agree with this, indeed as part of a National Service, lots of Jobs need doing...However discipline is a problem and needs overcoming, and also I would argue that if you do not do this and behave in a disrespectful way then you do not get your benefits.......a bit like working really.......
-
Could National Service ever be brought back?
Nope!

Maybe we need lessons to teach (or remind) folk that there is never shame in earning your own crust, no matter what the job is. There should however be shame in sitting on your arse living of other peoples hard earned money, if theres any possible alternative.

Was walking past some police officers who was speaking with a member of the public and I think National service was being discussed as his answer was " I was in the armed forces and we would not want them"
I was in the reserve (CDO Forces) and was doing my stint on the speel to potential recruits when I was asked "When will we get our gun?" Needless to say it set alarm bells ringing. Needless to say he did not return after realising it would not suit him.
I think that sums it up

I think that national service is not necessarily a bad idea, but it doesn't have to be the army. Community work, working with the elderly or with the environment! Something that gives these people a stake in society

There's enough flippin' holes in the roads, why can't they have a go at filling them in!
