After many years dithering i'm going to bite the bullet & get on with it. The longer i leave it the harder the non riding bureaucrats will make it. So later this year, (still taking long weekends off work to be with Dad) in the autunm i'll get it all booked. My gaffer will be fine as he's a biker anyway.
Bike wise, once legal no rush for anything expensive, just a mid range hack to smoke about on for a year or two & build up some no claims, then something a bit nicer. It'll be nice just to ride any old bike "legally". 8-)

Good luck with it.
I failed my first test, as I put my foot down on the u-turn :-[
-
Bike test was the easiest of all the driving tests for me... But there was no pressure ::) ::)
Good luck with it Guy :y :y
-
Good luck Guy. I passed in the days of 30 BHP 250c.c. machines in 1977. I have no idea what bike you are allowed to take your test on these days. :y

Would that be on a Francis Barnett.....Greeves ...or a Velocette?. Just curious what people used way back then. :)

Penny farthing, maybe?
I've often considered doing my bike test .. but the mental image of a fat knacker like me on a bike puts me off! Not to mention I'm not sure a learner bike would move with me sat on it..

failed mine on U turn too, but test has changed again, I was one of the last to get through on the old system.
Its now split, you do a test off road in a car park. U turns, S bends and such, which have to be done at 30mph even in wet. Quite a few compaints about that, lot of people fallen off :o
Emergency stop ect all done off road, you then do the on-road bit afterwards.
DAS course, which is straight to the big bike test (over 500cc) will cost around £500 :(
-
Go for it Guy! Good luck with it!
Still got my RD400, getting a makeover lol! Everyone has to try a stroker and have at least one stashed away lol!

You have the CBT, the bike training. That will allow you up to 125cc with L plates.
But for the test, to ride any power motorbike now, you need to take your test on a 500cc+ (usually a 500cc or 600cc)
Its called the DAS "Direct Access" - These causes often include CBT, so you do that on the Monday, then migrate to big bikes Tuesday, taking your test on the Friday :y
You can't do lessons, you have to do a (normally) week long course :)

Ok mate, i knew that, already got a lapsed CBT on a GS 125 but what about the theory/haz perception test? That has to be fitted into said week?

Ballcocks! That depends on the instructor ;)
I did mine over a few weeks :y
Although, I suppose that may have changed as you weren't long out of short trousers it was several years ago when I did mine :-X :-X :P :P

I would assume you still have to do it in advance

When I was looking no one offered lessons, it was course or nothing! Both Test places in town were course only as were Bicester and other locals.
Courses is the norm now :y

Took my bike test when the tester stood on a few street corners, those were the days,
Bit of a smile tho swmbo took her direct access about 5 years ago rang me in tears as she had failed. she fell of the bike on the slope out of the test centre now thats not good,
;D ;D

my mates and i used to try keeping up with yam rds on our honda super dreamsYes i had that problem as well but cured it by buying a LC 250 and fiting allspeeds and getting a port job :y :y
Must admit wish I still had me stinkweed as they seem to go for silly money now :) My brother made a phone call to a guy about a RD 400 and he wanted £3 k for it .....ouch!

I swapped one for a pushbike about 20 years ago. Someone nicked the bike about a week later. ::) ;D...........I do believe the pushbike would have given the wet dream a run for its money. :D ;D
-

Likewise, but more associated with the later Super Dream. :y
I once saw a 400 Dream in a bike shop with an autobox - I believe it was along the lines of the DAF Variomatic rubber band drive. :-/

Only has to be done before the test, can be taken during that week, but often done before. You have to pass both at the same time, there is a "nack" to the video bit ;)

:-[ Found my buff coloured provisional bike license a few weeks ago. :-[ circa 1962.. :-[ Examiner sent you off with instructions on the route to take, when you arrived back he got you to do an emergency stop. Twas real hard in those days... ;D ;D Can still see my front wheel curving upwards on that emergency stop.. Ahhh ! those Ariel Arrow leading links... ;)

If it is anything like the car perception test then you fail as an 'Advanced Driver' as it can not cope with the level of early identification of hazards.......... ::) ::) ::)

Exactly what I had, I was clicking too early outside the points section. I found "batch" clicking of around 5 or so when you see the danger ensured max points.
-
Always wanted one on these as a teenager, the factory was at the bottom of my road where I was born :-

I am really glad that I did the hazard perception when it was in its infantcy. I certainly would not like to do it now! Only one click... madness!

If your CBT expired in the last year or 2, you may have to wait, as there is some rule about not being able to 'renew' CBTs

First started biking on an fs1e god i wish i had it now those were the days took me months for my dad to sign guarantor on the hp forms for the wet dream 250 in black and even paid extra for the invader fairing if you remember them,

My Dad had a Honda Dream which had a full white fairing, people used to slow down and pull into the kerb, felt great that did why I was sat on the back. He then had the Super Dream. He had the GSX250 after that which I swapped him my CB100N for as soon as I passed my test. I had the bike 2 weeks then went onto our local Sunday Charity Motorbike ride "The Egg Run" where an RD125 overtook me like I was standing still. Monday afternoon I was the proud owner (or shall I say the bank was ;D) of my first RD350 YPVS N1..... What a bike. :y
Funny how I can still remember the reg number B967 BGP, wonder where it is now?
-
I too am interested in doing my bike test, I went to the local bike training center and the DAS cost 895 squids!. The bike shop next door had some nice 600s in their.... Tempted, very tempted ::)
-
I cheated and done my test as restricted upto 33BHP :D, although after two years you can migrate to the big boys toys. My big boy is a yammy 600 divvy, suits me.
My young lad just took his CBT and is just waiting to get his plates and bike (he's looking at a chinese replica of Honda CBR) they look quite nice :y

Guy, does that mean your provisional is out too? If I remember right, if your provisional expires you have to wait two years before you can re-apply for it? Dont want to scupper your dreams but its worth checking
-
No. I hold a full licence & HGV. CBT ran out years ago.
