Title: Performance chips? Worth it?
Post by: Anthony in Madrid on 28 August 2011, 16:01:59
Hi everyone :y
Has anybody chipped their Omega B 2.5 V6?
Does anyone know if it's worth it?
Your opinions too please.
Cheers.
Best regards
Anthony

I had looked in to it in the past. works well for diesel but opinions for petrol put me off. Having 3 litre cams instead. a Much better option for a similar price.

the camshafts from a 3.0 litre engine.. (only the inlet cams -marked as G cam (you need 2) , A cams are for exhaust )

I would go with what Dan says.

You can get quite a decent increase in power by fitting the cams out of a 3 litre Omega engine into your 2.5 litre - maybe 20 more bhp. You would need access to a cam timing kit or buy one S/H for about 60 pounds. Best to do the job at the same time as you change your cambelt and waterpump. Every four years or 64k km whichever comes first.

Otherwise getting more power out of the V6 isn't that easy or cheap. The best tuning you can do is make sure it is well maintained. Oil, filters, Idle Control Valve and so on.

the extra power is most noticable from about 4k revs upwards, below 4k not much difference to standard

Thanks henryd ;)
So just changing only "2" inlet camshafts (not the exhaust ones) from a 3.0 gives you the 18 bhp as stated in the "Vauxhall College Manual" link you sent?

Oh and....Is it an easy job to do?

Best price/performance upgrade for 2.5 is the 3.0l cams as stated. About £100 for parts.

I had a Powerchips (I think, it was over a year ago) - £400 iirc - in Goldie, which also had 3.0l cams, and I was unimpressed with the chips TBH, as on paper, the claimed increases with the cams and the chip should have put it somewhere in the region of my 3.0l. But it wasn't.  And I shagged it seeing what it was capable of  :-[
