Omega Owners Forum

Time has come for me to leave this forum.
I no longer own an Omega, and I think, to certain OOF members, non Omega owners shouldnt be here, regardless of how many Omegas they owned in the past.
I sing the praises of our Superb cos we are very happy with it, and see it as a step forward from an Omega.
Seems other people cant handle change........!!
One day, your aging, unreliable and rusting Omegas will need replacing and you will switch to other cars, whether or not you admit it to yourself now.
The Vauxhall Omega was a great car, we had 4 very good years driving them, but their time has come and gone and people are changing marques, live with it.......
Also, this forum has become very very clique of recent and I, like many other members, no longer feel a welcome part of it.
I found certain Admins "Do as I say not as I do" attitude very arrogant and unbecoming, and no longer wish to be active here, especially regarding use of foul language.
And the juvenile behaviour of another admin was nothing short of unbelievable.
Like Lizzie Zoom before me, I wont be back this time, but to be honest, I wont miss the hassle of it all.
Best of luck for resurrecting what was once a great forum, I hope the Admins manage to take stock of its decline, re-evaluate it and do something to improve the atmosphere on here.

I'm sorry that you feel the way you do, M, and I hope the Skoda serves you as well as my Omega serves me. ;)
If you do want to leave, however, it's down to you to press the button.

Exactly, no need for this attention grabbing bull. You don't have to post War & Peace to hit that button :)
If you can't take the occasional dig for owning a Superb, then well :-/ :-/
-
How much was the Skoda? I paid 700 notes for my MV6, and have only had to touch it for routine servicing in the 9 months i have owned it.
From another angle. I have just hit my first problem. Potential gearbox issue. Worst case for me is buy a known good box and fit it myself. All in about £100 inc ATF. What would that cost on the skoda?
Horses for courses.......
-
Oh here we go, another one, like Lizzie zoom, who can't accept that the universe revolves around the sun, and not one particular individual.
...dont forget, some behavior in the for sale sections, and to some other members in the used car market has been exceptionally poor IMO. And a name change isn't going to hide that on here.... ;)
-
M,
mondays are bad days to take decisions..
and why not try to talk to admins -if you have a problem- by pm instead of blaming them publicly.. :-/
-
If that's how you feel, press the button. Always a shame if a member wants to leave but down to each individual member.
Hope the Superb serves you well, just not my cup of tea ;)
Goodbye and good luck :y

Strange attitude to take . . Hopefully he's already pressed the button LD

WTF ::)
I think its called banter and should be taken as just that ::)
If you get a bit of stick, give it back ::)
If they have a genuine problem with your car ............... tell em to stick it where the sun don't shine ;D ;D
Sorry you feel like that M
Maybe you should try growing a pair ;D ( that bit was BANTER )

Never seen the bloke online before so can't say anything really.

Webby 23...? Let's hope he deletes both(?) accounts if he goes, not just one.., ;D

Shame you feel that way M, but, instead of bitching openly about the "problems" you have, why didn't you PM one of the Admin guys?
Although they have been known to fool around etc, its all been done with a sense of humour. I'm pretty sure though, that had you have passed on your concerns they would have been upfront and sensible and dealt with it.
I appreciate your unhappy about this forum now, but the rest of us and more than content with the way it is, if we weren't and felt as unhappy as you do, I'd have probably posted along the lines of......
Hi all, as much as I've enjoyed being on this forum, it's no longer for me. I wish all of the best and thanks for everything :y"
No bitching, moaning etc.... just call it a day.
In the meantime, I wish you all the best :y
-
I can't say I've noticed anyone making you feel unwelcome, but maybe I've missed something, or not read something into something that I should have. Still, we're quite a small moderation team, so we do occasionally miss things. Probably occasionally = frequently ;D
I own a Vauxhall and a Rover. I expect people to call the Vauxhall's rust buckets and the Rover a HG basher. I don't get emotional over it. Maybe I don't read enough into it, and just take it as banter :-/
You own a Skoda. You are a bit daft if you think people aren't going to mention Skoda jokes. Skoda may have improved since being swallowed by VAG (or some might say VAG have gone down the tubes since swallowing Skoda - I'd say an element of both :-X), but you have to accept the jokes will always be there.
Your Superb clearly suits you, good luck to you. Although I think you need to be less sensitive that its a Skoda ;). I think some members found it a bit tiresome that every time they posted a query about a problem, your reply was always 'buy a superb' though. Not overly constructive on an Omega forum ;). Despite the saloon's pig ugly looks, the Skoda Superb is not a bad car IMHO. Its not what I'd call a great car though - my neighbour had a 11 plate one briefly for about 5 months. Its an acceptable, if dull, drive, reasonably well equipped, but bland interior, and most have underpowered engines, with the diesels out of favour with company car drivers due to high tax when coupled with autoboxes. You can't see the exterior styling from inside, fortunately.
Good luck on finding a suitable site for VAG - I really struggled when we had Audis in the family (now got to find a good Renault one, oh dear :-[).
As others have said, its up to you if you want to leave, thus its up to you to delete your account.

From the other side I have only recently joined and have thrown quite a ffew questions that once answered seem so obvious, BUT so far i have been made welcome and evn had offers to do a repair at newent, I have had none of the "go and use Search" replies so i have to say so far this newbie is 100% happy

Good news Bob! :y
-
I have to admire the restraint of the members on here when replying to this - it shows the maturity of the main population on here. As for the original post, I can't remember reading such a load of self-important tosh for a long time.
If you're going to go, then do it - without such a song and dance!

"And the juvenile behaviour of another admin was nothing short of unbelievable"
I assume thats me ;D ;D
Let me put everyone of you straight.
I have and will carry on doing so, too do anything to help this Forum. Not for one second would I do anything to ruin it either. Anyone who thinks differently does not know me.
Good Luck with whatever your doing, hope your Skoda looks after you :y

Good to hear Bob :y

I too have nothing but positive comments to make about this forum. The maintainance guides and the answers to my questions, plus the loan of tools, has enabled me to tackle jobs that one year ago would have gone to the garage.
Keep up the good work. :y

most forums out there are abrupt, unfriendly and often have someone lurking who is just waiting for the oportunity to be down right obnoxious and unpleasant who never get dealt with by the mods of that site.
this is not one of them. from the comments made on the subject, most are of personal opinion, nothing else.
the mods are individuals and have there ways, as a team seem to keep things in a positive direction.

Good luck on finding a suitable site for VAG - I really struggled when we had Audis in the family (now got to find a good Renault one, oh dear :-[).
Mrs Woody had an Octavia vRS, which at 240 BHP was just about the fastest "real-world" car I've driven. And capable of 45mpg. Clearly superior to an Omega on both counts. But it's always going to be front-drive, which will forever relegate it to the second division.
we, too had trouble finding a good forum for it. She bought the moderator's car and joined the "Briskoda" forum. Got four welcome messages, three of which were enquiring as to the size of her norks.
-
;D oh dear oh dear...
So maybe M is trying to get OOF to take on vag cars as well...?

Also, this forum has become very very clique of recent and I, like many other members, no longer feel a welcome part of it.
It really hacks me off when disgruntled members accuse the forum of being "clique". >:( So members that have been on here for years and become good friends should be formal and business like instead of having a laugh and bit of banter? :-/ I don't think so!!

It does appear to be the self centered attention seeking types that go for that line.
....community = clique ...now what does that say about the individual? :-X
-
Good luck M.
Here's your new New Forum link, with friendly people, sound advise and lots of people wanting to muck in and help out for free.

Indeed... I was having the same discussion yesterday.
The funny thing is, the people who are accused of being "cliquey" are the ones who generally make a big effort to speak to as many people as possible at a meet ::)
-
Clique? Are we talking about those who are being groomed? ;D
-
Maybe we should have a poll "Is OOF cliquey?"
I must be honest, a hell of a lot of members I have spoken to in the last year or so believe strongly that it is,and becoming more so.One chap I spoke to last week said he had stopped posting a year or so ago because of it but had come back for another look and it had got much worse.
Its a subject which rears its head often - so smoke/fire etc? :-/

I think it is more of a case that some of the "higher post count" users know each other personally away from the forum and meet up fairly often where as if you have never met them, it can be hard work strikeing up a conversation "online" with them :y
That "to some people" can come across as cliquey :-/
Some people come across better "in the flesh" then sat behind a screen ;)
I know I do but I'm pretty thick skined nowdays so I couldn't give a break what people think of me behind a computer screen ;D
But sorry M, but as I said, no need to spit yeh dummy out. Time too chill out and grow a pair of gonads ;D ;)
But one thing I do know ................ things do get said "via pm" about some users ;)
Pretty sad realy if it can't be said "online to there face " ;)
-
meh i have cookies. :-*
ive heard this superb bashing on here before about it being so ugly, i dont think its that ugly, its just kinda generic german saloon. nothing to look at but its no fiat multipla lol
As for being clique then it can seem a little at first to some maybe? although from my reading of threads its mostly banter between friends, much like i have on other car forums, this is def one of the more friendly helpful forums around imo :y

So how are members on here that have met and known each other for a long time supposed to act in order not to be classed as "cliquey" then? :-/ In my humble opinion, anyone that deems to refer to the forum as such is doing so because they are not prepared to join in and interact as friendly human beings. ::) If "cliquey" = helping out others, friendship and fun, then I'm all for it. :y

I don't care what you say, Dent, you're not being in my gang. :P

the only main problem this forum had was that some people got a bit offensive if they didnt like your views or agree with their views. dont think ive seen that for quite a while now though, maybe or possibly cause they have left the forum now with a bag full of dummies that got thrown about ;)
-
I think some people see 'cliquey' as being a few exchanges of banter between some members, where the subject of the banter may be from other threads that less frequent visitors may not be familiar with. This may happen on threads that the person may have started maybe
'Banter' must be a problem for some people ::) ::)
-
'banter' keeps forums going ;D

it does ninja, if you cant have a bit of a wind up and a laugh on a forum it becomes just another site for information and guidance and nothing more.

The cliquey thing, as Albs has said, has been mentioned before.
There is no easy answer to that, as as bob.dent and others have said, many long standing, active members have made the effort to go to various meets, including the usual 2/3 big camping meets each year. Naturally, many members have become good friends with other members.
I think the friendship thing is a really good thing - its handy to have a similar Omega enthusiast nearby, in case you need a hand, or just advice. Or even just a chat over a beer and a pint.
The downside is an apparent closed circle, with newbies feeling that they can't get a look-in. 'We' active members need to do all we can to make them feel welcome, and make them want to join in.
I do feel that you get out of OOF what you put in. If you never join in, never offer advice, and just come on to get help on your car, I don't think you will get much out of the site. I know people who just take - those who are just me-me-me - do nark off a lot of regular, active members.
-
Or even just a chat over a beer and a pint.
I must admit, I do miss coming down to Brackley, working my nuts off on cars, and then getting the p1ss ripped over a few beers!!
-
I wonder if M knew he was about to spark off 6 pages of cliquey twaddle? ::) ;D
-
Or even just a chat over a beer and a pint.
I must admit, I do miss coming down to Brackley, working my nuts off on cars, and then getting pissed with a few queers!!
no need for that james :-?
-
Just my 2.4p worth (inc VAT)... :)
Gen chat can, and does, get a bit "cliquey" in-as-much as groups of folks tend to post in the same "style" as each other with often similar topics, - some serious, some light hearted - from a newbie point of view this looks like a "clique". Strong banter between small groups also gives that impression.
However, and this is the most important point IMHO .... outside of gen chat there are no cliques, just people trying to help with tech advice, assistance, parts etc etc.
OOF is far far more than gen chat, IMHO gen chat is actually the weakest part of OOF ( many will not agree ... fine .. you are entitled to your views.. just as much as I'm entitled to mine :) )
So the desperately announced "I'm leaving" (read .. please beg me to stay) in gen chat should probably be totally ignored rather than a 6 page thread discussing it ........ M has generated more comment in this one thread than in 6 months of other drivel .. :)

I am a 'nearly newbie' on here, and have to say was in awe of the knowledgeable people on the forum. I thought I would not be accepted as 'one of the gang' as such. But I have to say, after setting up the Bucks meet, which was attended by 'the knowledgeable' I found them all to be so friendly, and the day was full of banter.
However, taking up TB's point about advice, I am in no position to offer advice on Omega repairs. I have nothing but praise for all those who have helped me and especially TB who finds me on his doorstep :y I expect there are others in my position, who would love to offer advice, but just do not know mechanics or electrics. :(
And one does not want to make a tit of oneself in such talented company :y

Some great points there Mr Entwood :y :y

However, taking up TB's point about advice, I am in no position to offer advice on Omega repairs. I have nothing but praise for all those who have helped me and especially TB who finds me on his doorstep :y I expect there are others in my position, who would love to offer advice, but just do not know mechanics or electrics. :(
You misinterpreted what I meant (ie, I made a pigs ear of explaining ;D) - some people do come on here just to 'take'
You do not get 619 posts without 'giving' - giving does not have to be Omega advice, after all, not everybody is in a position to be able to help. If they were able, then there would be no need for OOF ;).
619 posts shows you have joined in, become a part of OOF, and even took the time to organise the fantastic Bucks meet :y. Even ignoring the posts associated with the Bucks meet, you would still have well over 500 posts. 500 posts in a subject, by you own admission, that isn't your specialist subject, shows you have been more than willing to 'take part'.
-
Martin, sorry to see you feel that way.
It is Admin policy not to delete accounts for people, that is something that only a user should do.
As for the give, I feel pretty much everybody gives, including the original poster of this thread.
As somebody who likes to help with problems when I can, the fact that a member has even posted a fault for me is a little gift as it allows me (and many others) the opportunity (which sadly is not as often as I would like myself at the moment) to do what I enjoy.....solving problems and helping. In addition, I am sure the information posted in helping is also an education and small enlightenment into how a modern car works for others even those that read and dont post.
Although we can not all answer and solve the problems, it takes the original post of a question from the newbies and those less knowing in this field to start the ball rolling for all.....so never consider yourself to not be a giver because you cant solve the faults.
As for the general chat debate, we are all (thankfuly) different, some will enjoy general chat and the odd bit of banter, that is good (this is not question time on the bbc so should not be stale). Hence why we have general chat, car chat, help areas.....hopefuly something for all.
And there ends my 2p worth ;D :y

That, if I may say so, just about sums up all that this forum is about.
Great response TB :y

The other thing worth saying on the matter is that an organisation as large as OOF is always going to have members in close circles and others more loosely associated. There are always going to be aspects of it that seem impenetrable at first. This is true of online forums as much as it is workplaces, clubs and societies and other places where people meet face to face let alone with the typed word as the main form of communication.
I tend to judge such places by the welcome I receive as a newcomer. If you get a friendly welcome, you can bet that you'll become a part of it, given time, and enjoy your time there.

Thats always been my view, which is why I fought for, and have always backed a Newbie Welcome area, so members can genuinely welcome new members.

Interestingly, I hardly ever post in Newbies (I hang my head in shame) :-[

You are not alone :-[
But the fact that many do take the time is good for our community :y

In my defence, I do feel the time I am able to set aside for OOF is probably better used in other sections :-[

I think Richies has the shakes again as its taking him ages to post a reply (admin privilege!)

Because of my current headaches, apparently I have been a miserable B for a week or 2 :-[

Its gonna be a good'un I reckon. Or he's fallen asleep at the keyboard :P

Ah, hes given up!

well i'm not one for giving advice, i dont take things in as easy as others and i would hate to give the wrong advice and create a problem for anyone. i am more of a listener than a marge proops. i find coming on here is an escape from the days stress as well as as learning about every subject going on every type of topic. from health to legal to sexual to senile problems or advice. To be honest, its like wikepedia on here in my opinion.if anyone near me needed help i would certainly oblige them rather than see them struggle. ive only met pete elite who lives local and found him a great bloke to get on with and helpful and from what i see the majority of people on here are the same.

has anyone noticed, he has not actually been man enough to press that button yet? He's still active!

The system only tracks for 15 mins, then assumes he'd closed the browser ;D

Dunno if any other of his persoae have been online since though.... :)

as it happens i'm being forced to watch big brother after sitting through bellenders and having a row with my son about it, he thinks its great i think its :-X.
i just wish i could go back home and not have the tv on at all.

I've been living without a TV for a few weeks. It's great!! I watch what I want on the iplayer (just watched Harry's Arctic Heros! :y :y :y) and I've read alot of books. Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts is highly recommeded :y :y :y
Back on topic. This thread is not just cliquey twaddle as I posted earlier, but seems too have prompted abit of naval gazing ::) which I'll indulge in myself. I've been a member since 2008 and I havn't even been made Sir Tigger yet!! :-[ Although I may just get my next star tonight!! I've been given some great advice here which has saved me hundreds if not thousands of pounds!! and the fact that my car hasn't been converted into bakebean tins is a tribute to the members and their expertise!! :y :y :y
As to the 'banter' the General Discussion area is abit like the pub, generally quite amusing and informative, but if you don't like the conversation, don't spit the dummy, go to another area! ;)

General chat used to be a great place to hang out in the evenings. Tbh I think its been dying a slow death for a couple of years now, and I dont think theres any way to bring it back.
You couldnt possibly contrive or manufacture the atmosphere there used to be in genchat.Very sad imo :(

Was tried a while ago by Nickbat, Bob. Didnt seem to last long. :-/

I did think about checking, but, TBH, can't be bothered, it makes no odds to me either way :-/
I'm always sorry to see the back of a member who played mostly by the rules, but to quote M himself, we all have to move on eventually (OK, slightly out of context).
Good luck to those that decide OOF is not, or no longer, for them. Sadly we cannot please everyone all the time, as much as we would like to.
If anyone has any constructive comments, good or bad, about improving OOF, please start a new thread, or PM an Admin direct :y
But its time to wish M well, and close this thread :)
