Title: Tech2 for sale?
Post by: TheBoy on 05 June 2007, 20:11:38
OK, just testing the water here, would there be any interest in buying it here?

Would be Tech2 unit, lead to plug into standard diags socket, a Dell Latitude PIII 650Mhz, 256Mb RAM, 20G HDD with W2K Pro (with licence).

Obviously, we're not talking peanuts, if you are serious, you know the value...

Would be nice, but I bet owning this is a double edged sword.

Nice to have and nice little earner, but constant stream of people to help at awkward times.

Is there any merit in the forum buying it?

A whip round amongst the active membership would secure it for less than a single Tech2 session at VX per member, I'd wager. Obviously there are recurring costs to maintain it but it would be a valuable resource for the forum members.

Collecting the funds, managing access to it and the like would not be without their headaches but not insoluble if we want it badly enough.

Jaime and his Tech2 have been a lifeline to many of us (which reminds me, Jaime, I still owe you for some Tech2 stuff - speak to you in Keswick) and we need to think about what life would be like without it!

Failing this, is there any merit in the forum investing in a less expensive diagnostic tool?

Just thought I'd float the ideas. I don't have a feeling for whether they're workable or not but it's got to be worth asking the question.

Like the tool pool, I think a 'forum owned' Tech2 would be a bit too unmanagable and a logistical nightmare....

I like Kevin's idea and would be willing to contribute to a 'forum owned' Tech2, but I also acknowledge the potentail problems as highlighted by TheBoy. So if someone could come up with a workable scheme then I'm in :y, otherwise I'd better get chummy with my local Vx stealer....  :(

Ok, Jaime is leaving, selling his Omega and Tech II. He is entitled to do that, and we will cope.

He has family in South Africa iirc - and he's not trying to outrun the Feds, so South America seems unlikely ;)

What’s the commotion all about? It is a well known fact that OOF is like Hotel California – you can check-out whenever you like but you can never leave. There are Omegas in ZA and they have Internet access – so there…

I do agree however that a trip to Johannesburg to get my auto box updated is a bridge too far   ;D

Anyway, whatever you choose to do in life TB - good luck with it!  :y

Tech2 - I am thinking maybe we need a whip round on the forum.

We need to think about how it might work first. As TheBoy and others have said, and as I appreciated when I first suggested the idea, "tool pool" schemes have been discussed and rejected in the past. However, this is a special case, I feel, because it's not something many members would ever shell out for themselves, so this is our only option if we want a real Tech2 available to us at sensible prices.

The first issue is that some members will be happy to contribute, some won't, and suddenly we have 2 tiers of members, paid, and unpaid, which is something we have strived to avoid.

I guess we could have 2 scales of charging for Tech2 work to reflect this, and consider the Tech 2 separate to the forum. Or we could consider the contributions a donation to the Forum funds and treat all members equally regardless of whether they contributed.

The second issue is where it is located. It's the type of thing you need as a diagnostic aid when you get a problem so it's not going to be much use if it's at the other end of the country. It could be present at all the meets, of course, but that's not normally when you get a problem, although routine work could be done then.

It's too valuable to be sent around the country at random, IMHO. I guess we could nominate custodians in various areas and rotate the location among the custodians so everyone gets a Tech 2 close to them for a proportion of the time, hand carrying the unit whenever it moves.

I guess an idea of the numbers involved would help, too. How many members would contribute and how much?

Maybe this weekend will provide a good opportunity to discuss the possibilities?

Kevin

Now this is a off the cuff idea which will be blown out of the water stright way but.

How about if the forum had some ads on it and they would pay for the Tech2 in no time at all

I know the Admins dont want ads but this may be a way of buying the Tech2

Just a suggestion dont blow me out of the water to far lol

Anyway, Tech 2 aside, I went to South Africa last year.

It's a bl00dy long way away!  :o

I reckon if Jaime were to pack up the server, take it to S.A. and then commission it there'd be over 24 hours down time!  :o :o :o

I only hope he gives us enough warning to get some Valium prescribed. Or do they do patches for Forum dependency these days?

TB - if he is referring to re-flashing the ECU and upgrading the firware, theh this should be possible - you did it on my 2.6 facelift and if I am not mistaken you also did it on AA's 2.2. If this relates to re-mapping the ECU then it is probably possible though I don't think anyone has actually tried it yet?
