It is one of a few car options I am considering at the moment, the Mig is to big and poor on fuel for work in the long run..... :( :( But I do like the idea of being different from the norm in my work..... :y

You got a bargain there, I paid £3300 for my son for TPF&T on a 2002 1.1 Saxo with no mods, living in a low crime area and parked on driveway.

Really! Just you wait till a certain little miss turns those big eyes on you and then we'll see! ::) ;D
-
I had to buy my own car, as did my siblings, I think everyone should.
Additionally, I wasn't allowed a loan, so had to save up any buy the cheapest reliable runner I could find (my lovely Triumph Acclaim - and yes, I did like it)

My point being, I'm with DTM on this one

I see a soft mother heart ;D ;D :y
I'm with TheBoy and Mr DTM in that subject..
Driving a car may have very serious consequences so imo its better to wait till they become mature and buy with their self money..
but.. times are changing and may be my ideas are old like me ;D :-/

Its an interesting point that my eldest bro's kids (twins, boy and girl) got a new Fiesta each on their 18th birthday.
Now don't get me wrong, they are very good kids adults, always have been. Kind, curteous, honest, behaved etc etc. However, my bro got divorced when they were young (3 or 4?), and I remember their (slightly older) cousin, also from a broken home, saying to them how good it was to have 2 mummies and 2 daddies, and how to use that :o. I was truely shocked at the time, such deviousness coming from someone so young.
I think the deal was that my bro and his ex went halves on the cars, and the kids had to buy the insurance. Bummer is that the lad got a door kicked in somewhere, then as soon as he got it back, had it nicked from outside his house.
I suspect next year, the lad won't be able to insure it - although I think he's been told he's not allowed to take it to Uni anyway.

I didn't have my own car until I left home, worked and lived near a city centre so didn't need one.
No way Dad would have bought me a car, he wouldn't even let me have driving lessons until I was 18 as he didn't think I was responsible enough. ::)
In hindsight he had a point! :y

You Dad clearly was a good judge of character, Miss Ljay ;D

I suspect that he stands by his opinion 15 years on and still sits in the passenger seat with his hand hovering over the handbrake! ::)

Buy a Merc then. ;D ;D They generally have a foot operated parking brake ;) ;)

So does mine. ;D then again, he took me out for my first drive on the 17th birthday and nearly voided himself in his attire when I got a bend a bit wrong and the back end stepped out. :o
Fast forward 12 years and he was ready to get back in a car with me again.. Just in time for a ride in the Westfield, so that didn't end well, either. ;D Back to square one. ::)
-
I bought cars for mine when they passed their tests - would I have done so if they were reckless, difficult kids ?- then definitely no as they would be a danger to themselves and others.
If the parents have the money and the kids are good 'uns then do not see a problem giving them a start as long as they do not abuse it.
Mrs and in laws were big fans of UNO/Punto and later on in laws had Pandas - great value motors.
Parents bought me a car in 1969 before I passed my test (Austin A60 with no synchro on 2nd) - they paid for lessons at £1.50 and I needed 9 or 10 I think.

I had one lesson off my Dad in a car park, with him yelling mind that tree (which was in the next field) which didn't end well either. :(
He decided at that point that as I was as volatile as my mother he wasn't going to teach me. ;D
He taught her to drive, then criticised her driving which resulted in a door being slammed in his face and a broken nose! :o
My poor Dad! I've driven his new car once and don't intend to again, at least not with him in the passenger seat! ::)

Good news millwall. She'll learn to drive now properly now then :y
-
I'm not against buying my boys cars in time but will depend on them as individuals.

I tend to agree, Master Vamps has covered almost all of the costs of putting him on the road and has the money to give me to renew his part of the insurance... :y
We did give my eldest step son a car for Christmas some years ago, but it stood us at nothing as I was going to px it but got a better deal by not, hence a free car.... :y I paid for his insurance and he paid me back over a few months, they do need to learn the value of money and they have so I did not mind helping out a bit..... :y

we decided to buy her a car as she is a sensible hard working girl she is doing a plumbing apprentaship and earns sod all but never moans there are conditions though she wont be taking any friends in the car for 6 months so she can get a bit of experience plus yes i spoil all 3 of my kids but they are all polite and friendly and they never give it the "i want" if that wasnt the case they would get nothing ;D
