Looking for a bit of support from fellow OOF’ers to be honest...
Up and till a last few days ago I had loads of interest in driving my ex police mig, love the v6 and power, though have to say that I’m starting to lose interest in the Mig all thanks to how my car insurance renewal premium has come out yet again >:(.
I know it happens to all of us, every year we get our wonderful renewal quote and it normally starts all over again, trying to find a cheaper quote as they’ve gone and increased it yet again.
All I wanted to do is insure my ex 3.2 police car with a few simple mod’s (mv6 wheels, Irmscher boot spoiler, spotlights and with a limited up to 5k a year mileage.
I’m 45, double figure NCDs, live in a relative low risk area and my quote was originally around £600 TPFT with the company I'm with! Quick call to the insurance company and amendments and get it down around £400, which is better I admit.
I've tried that ‘bemused.com’ site, no chance, comes out around £700 mark and pretty much so does everywhere else I've tried!
Had one so-called reputable firm whom specialises in modified cars and the insurance firm wouldn’t insure me for anything less than fully comp, which came out around £1200... Jezz.
I’ve tried almost everywhere and for the moment, still can’t get it better than the £400 mark for TPFT.
I don’t know, perhaps I am losing touch with the car market these days. But does this quote actually seem expensive to you lot?
I really do like driving the Omega, but it’s becoming a bit of a joke now and I’m starting to lose all interest in cars altogether, thanks to the way that insurance being what I think is now become a total and blatant rip-off in the last two years :-/.
What’s the point of building / modifying something if you can’t drive it on the road without paying over the odds for limited mileage policy?
Did have big plans for the car, but if that’s how much they’re after with minor mods, it’s going to be a non-starter for what I have planned for it. The intention was collecting all the bits I want, take it off the road, do the modifications, then back on the road once it’s all done with fully comp to cover all that’s been done... fat chance it’s going to happen at this rate.
Now feel I’m in a bit of a quandary?
Do I just shut up and just pay the damn £400 and keep it for another 12mths, sell it and down grade back to a 4cyl Omega and forget the whole project altogether or call it a day with regards to owning an Omega full stop?
And I know if I go and sell it I won't get much for it as large Capacity Omegas with low spec are worth Sweet nothing these days :-/
To be honest, how I’m feeling now the last one seems the better option. As owning and modifying a car these days isn’t as much fun and rewarding as it once was for me. I don’t know, maybe it’s how I’m feeling at the moment, guess I’ll have to have long think about which direction to go in now?

You're getting quotes for TPF&T, I see that you got just one rediculous quote for fully comp, but by & large at your/our/my age ;) it doesn't usually make it any cheaper going for 'just' TPF&T.
Is it the fact it's a 'modified' car or due to being a large capacity car that's loading your premiums. I'd had quote of £500 & £600 and more for just the Omega too, although I think my postcode doesn't help.

Personal view that quote does seem pretty reasonable and not because i pay £700, but taking your stats into consideration...

your only saying that hoping to run and maintain the 4pot will be cheaper, yes it might be a little! But not that you still wont see the dent on your wallet anyway.
And as you had soo much hope to get the 3.2 on road, if you get back into the 4pot you will definitely fell something is MISSING.
?
Im sure you know omegas have high running/maintaining costs. And every individual OOFer on here must have stacks full of receipts that they spent on their Miggy but they appreciate driving their Miggy.
whats going to make you FEEL GOOD!! :y :y

I can't remember the last time I paid less than £600 to insure a car.. and that only lasted a year until I modified it ;D
-
Hang in there, keep hunting around and i am sure you will get a satisfactory outcome. (Maybe multicar options if other vehicles are in the household?)

Overall insurance has gone up, and the quote given here does sound reasonable! ;)
-
Mine was just over £400 this year with Saga, full and protected NC, with 6 points and a claim( in the last 4 years) for Fully Comp. Which is reasonable when I compared other companies they all came out around the same.
-
Hi Mike, like you I'm 40 odd full NCD, clean licence etc etc. I'm with Swintons at the moment and have been for 3 years now. I'm paying just under £500 fully comp iirc. Thats with No voluntary excess and £100 compulsary and 5k mileage limit.
It was £350 last year, so peeved this year, but after reading other peoples quotes, maybe it's not so bad :o
Give them a call if you haven't already?
I can give you my insurance reps office number if you want it and give them my details, they may give a discount ;)

I'm doing insurance quotes for 3.2 Elite :-X - Average cost appears to be around £500, i'm 27 with 10 years NCB
-
A quick question.....what does your log book state the car is?
As mv6 wheels and Irmscher boot spoiler may ve considered standard fit for the vehicle quoted on the log book.

Which post code do you give them? Then again, 10yrs NCB will bring it down I guess (I only have 2 on the Elite's policy, 10+ on the MR2)
[edit] That sounded a bit accusatory :D I just know that you keep the bike somewhere other than in London (right?) and I guessed it has a much lower insurance loading than W7.. because otherwise that sounds like a great quote for where you live :)
-
For my 3.2 elite I'm fully comprehensive with full protected NCD and I pay a tad under £300 with Admiral (age 49). That's with the jetex stainless exhaust declared and on the certificate and with third party entitlement to drive other vehicles and bikes not belonging to me. Car is kept on driveway (thought I was pushing my luck to say that four cars and a motorbike were kept in our single garage ;D ;D ).
Must be our posh postcode that keeps it down ;D ;D ;D ;D
Regards
Alan

mine's with RAC. fully comp and includes full RAC cover in the UK. £60 a month as tesco wanted to charge me £870 for the renewal year :o :o >:( >:( >:( >:( thieving so and so's!
don't take this the wrong way but £400 equates to just over £30 a month. if that disheartens you what are you going to do when the bill comes in for the mods/parts etc? :-/
if i were you i'd sell the mig and get a kia picanto or something really small. cheap to run and cheap insurance! :y
-
£246 FC, protected NCD, declared LPG on 03 3.2 Elite LT Auto.
-
Have you tried Adrian Flux ??
http://www.fluxdirect.co.uk
I insure a 3.2 Elite with FULL Irmscher body kit and LPG for £239 a year fully comp
(mind you I'm a KOS .. :) )

be sure to read your next renewal! they bank on repeat business and youll prob find it goes up a lot to recoup on the good price you got now! :y
-
Recently renewed mine with Churchill went up from £320 to £390. Fully comp protected, no claims, I've got ten years plus no claims and am the wrong side of fifty. Did a load of shopping around found a quote £20 cheaper but the cover was not as good and the excesses where higher
-
Just a thought, I notice you say Third Party.
try going Fully Comp and upping the Excess. You may be pleasantly surprised......

They have no chance ;D ;D
I normally start getting quotes about a month before its due. Its even in the diary on my phone and laptop so I don't forget :y
This year, my insurance went up by a grand total of .................. 16 quid :) :)
Thanks anyway :y

Shame they can't seem to tell an adult project builder who values life from a bell-end turning a Paxo into a death trap. It's a PITA I know but stout heart and don't let them grind you down. A pound a day is an irritation but there are worse things.
My experience in keeping costs down is fully comp rather than TPF&T, accept a voluntary excess as mentioned above and, above all, find a mature female with NCB, preferably related, to include as an occasional driver. Mine was over £100 cheaper with my wife as an additional driver.
Best of luck! :y

Thanks all for your support :y .
Have a few numbers now and ideas of what to try, so will keep phoning around to see if I can better what I've had so far.
Apologises for it being a bit of a long drawn out moan, but knew that you lot would understand :).
Let you know how it goes in a few days time ::)
Cheers :y

Im with you Gooseman! 20 years of running (and declaring!) modified Capris, the last one being 2.0l with special cam, head,R1 carbs, brakes and suspension all upgraded and at the same time running my R1, fully comp, all mods declared (153@ back wheel) including Ohlins and uprated brakes, full leathers, helmet, breakdown cover etc and I could insure the two, both fully comp, for LESS than the cheapest quote I got for the Omega TPFT! SCUM!
