Hi all, I was looking to do something a bit different next year and wondered if I could drum up any interest on the forum. Basically, I would like to do a kind of gumball rally cruise from lands end to john o groats. This rally would involve no times, more of a major cruise really. I would look to camp along the way every night and would plan the stops in advance to make it easy for anyone that wants to tag along. I would look to do this in convoy with as many other cars as possible.
If not, I would be looking for a co driver or 2.
I would like to get all the local presses involved and make it a charity event.
I think that's enough waffling for now, just wanted to see if anyone is up for a major omega convoy across the uk?
The reason I say next year is to allow us to save the money and work out the route/overnight stops.
Thanks
Mike
-
i'd be up for it especially for charity.
-
Certainly sounds different, might have legs this one.
I'd be interested. :y
-
Sounds good especially the charity bit.
-
:y :y yep sounds good to me. my mate did it recently with a traction engine for cancer research. get some dates then we can work on it. :y :y :D
-
sounds good to me
-
id be up for it and my mate would so id be sorted for a co driver was you thinking summer next year bit cold camping in the winter
-
that is a bit different! better get saving. would cost a hell of a lot in fuel! we dont drive very economical cars here do we!
-
Great idea i'd be up for it, imagine a huge convoy of migs, fantastic! :y
-
who will be driving the fuel tanker then ? ;D ;D ;D
-
who will be driving the fuel tanker then ? ;D ;D ;D
gordon brown whilst rubbing his hands together at all the money he and his corrupt cronnies will be earning from us, t*ssers
-
First penny in the jar towards this good cause from me! Hope it works out!
-
i hope it comes off also, & gordon brown can get stuffed. lets go for it :y :y
-
Wow! I am really pleased with the interest that this has attracted!
I am away camping in rainy (and I mean rainy) Cornwall at the moment. I am due back tomorrow, but just to confirm, this is for next summer, and this is a run from the far south to the far north on a sponsored basis for charity.
I have never organised anything like this before, so if someone wants to volunteer to help, I would be grateful. I am looking to have the camping stops planned in advance so that if you wanted to meet half way and do half the run, you would know where to find us.
I would be looking to get the local press and any Vauxhall dealers we could involved.
My intention is to get a largish map and plan 150 ish miles per day from lands end.
Thanks for your interest and I can't think of anything better than 20 or so migs running the length of the country. So, its £200 worth of fuel, surely its worth it?
Any interested runners have an idea of what charity we could do it for, UNISEF?
Thanks
Mike

could ask my mate in cornwall, he managed to get lots of sponsors for his run, but then again it was with a 1929 traction engine. he did top to bottom. will give him a call for idea`s. this sounds like its going to be a go-er. also, dont forget, that wherever you are in the country, if you do the whole run, that means you are doing the length of the country twice..ummm that puts your cost`s up a bit eh. thought i would mention that. :y
-
Yes, it is a go-er because I will be doing it, I am just trying to get more members to do it with me!
I have got to drive 300 miles south to get to lands end and then back up again....oh well!
Planning this will give me something to do at work!!!
Mike
-
Interesting idea........how long do you think it will take for the run?? 4/5 days??
Will watch the thread with interest :y
-
stick my name down for it mike. definately up for it. maybe the wife will have the guts to drive it by then, she`s scared to bits to drive it at the moment. ah well eh. keep us informed. :y :y
-
i'm up for this.
-
Ok, just checked the distance and it is about 850 miles, so based on my 150 per day, we would be looking at about 6 days. I am allowing 2 weeks because I need to drive from reading to lands end, then to john o groats and then back to reading.
Mind you, I have put 2000 miles on my old girl in the last 2 weeks, so she should be fine!
Thanks
Mike
-
id help out anyway i can also new to me only had a miggy for a month im looking forward to this could do it for the air amblance
-
OK, I'm back for rainy Cornwall and would be looking at the following dates.
Meet at a campsite (for a night or two) somewhere near Lands End on either:
Friday / Saturday 14th / 15th Aug 09
or
Friday / Saturday 21st / 22nd Aug 09
With the Bank Holiday being Monday 24th. As I said, I am allowing 2 weeks for this, so I can take advantage of a midway BH or a days rest at the end before returning to work!
Lets see some genuine interest then:-

mike, what was you thinking of for the accomodation..Ie. tent, van or lodge :)
-
My family and I will be staying in a tent, but you are welcome to stay in whatever you like.
Once we decide on the break towns, you could plan your accomodation if you didn't want to camp.
I will be trying to get the campsites we stay at on the way to help us in any way they can. Maybe a bit of publicity for them?
Thanks
Mike

ok. i was just wondering as we have a massive tent, it would be a bit of a bugger to put up & take down for one night stops... no probs, will go out & get a 2 person easy up one..ta. :y

Leave Cornwall after getting there :o :o :o :o

Mike if you want to do this for a charity, you could try and get some sponsership from a fuel company to help pay for the fuel for the trip. If it's for a very well known cause then you will proberbly stand a better chance of getting it. You may have to have some form of livery on the car from the sponsers but hey, best way to get some publicity for them and for OOF as well, if someone can come up with some form of livery for the trip.

Paul,
Yes, I was hoping that UNISEF would get involved and Ewan McGregor would meet us somewhere. I have asked the question. I am also looking to get fuel company sponsorship and even ask the campsites to help a bit.
I am in talks now with a mate of mine that designs websites to ask if he will do a website for it that we can upload images to and Blog.
You not in then?
Mike

Would love to be your co-pilot but might not be able to get the time off work. I thought about doing the samething a few years ago, but thats as far as I got. You never know I might be able to do the same with my company for a kids charity as they love that sort of thing but would need to speak to the MD's about it, if they like the idea we could do it together but will see.

OK, update...
Shell - can't help
BP - still waiting to hear
UNIDEF, still waiting to hear.
Will push harder once I get the website up and running.
We may have to livery up our cars a bit if we get seriously sponsored, but we'll see.
Mike

sounds like this could be a great oportunity to do a great deal for a charity & also push the oof a little. everyone i know that has done the j.o.g to l.end run seem to have done it for cancer research, i think it would be nice to choose some other charity. thats open to discussion i presume with whome will be taking part?. we need more folks, so come on chaps, get ya names down!!. :y
-

Nice to see you're in Rob!
For those that are interested, the rough route is:-
Lands End - Newton Abbot - Exeter - Shaftsbury - Cirencester - Warwick - Burton On Trent - Huddersfield - Kendal - Keswick - Penrith - Carlisle - Paisley - Invergarry - Inverness - John O' Groats.
That's 975miles!
If you can average 30mpg, at a pump price of 115.9p per litre, the cost of the trip would be £171.01
Thanks
Mike
-
hi mike. any chance of putting up the roads we be using. would help find campsites etc if i know the route. :y :y
-
Kris,
This rough route was from the Autoroute you bought down on Saturday.
Does that help, or do you need me to post the roads up still?

will be over double that, as you have home to lands end, and john o groats to home.

sorry mate, been a long weekend. :-[ :-[
do you still want me to send a copy of auto route for you to stick on your puter
-
TB, yes, I know. Living in Reading, I have about 270 miles to Lands End before the start, and then 680 at the end. Thats a whopping 1925 miles for me in 2 weeks. Mind you, the old girl has just done 2000 miles in 2 weeks whilst holidaying in Wales and Cornwall.
My mileage and costs were for the actual trip.
Kris - yeah go on then mate if you don't mind.
Thanks
Mike

Mike
Honestly think you'd be doing this without us?
way good to miss out on, this op doesn't come around often! :y
Rob

Yup, count me in. Fancied summit like this for a while.
Keep us posted!

OK, date is decided as 14th August.
We will be in Cornwall for the 14th, and kick off for the trip will be 17th August (Monday).
Now we just need to decide which Charity.
Mike
-
The charities have not been as willing to accept the money as I had thought they would be?

Having a little chat about this t'other day with HNO3 and Kris ----- HNO3 suggested Children In Need ( basically as being a charity it's easy to give to!!!! I tried to sponsor Great Ormond Street on my website -- the hoops they want you to jump through are unbelievable !!!)
-
Mate of mine did this a few years ago with a few mates.. on Honda C90s. I think they had watched too many "purple helmets" videos. Anyway, they made it, a sore @rse and a few bodges and rebuilds later.

anyone thought of NSPCC. mrs nut just mentioned it to me. :)
-
Jon,
Tell Mrs Nut I have added it to the poll.
Thanks
Mike

another from mrs nut, british epilepsy association. ::)

After some pretty exhausting emails to and from some of the charities that were in line to receive the proceeds from this trip, I reckon it will be best for each driver to nominate his own charity and arrange the sponsorship themselves.
I think I will go for either the Berkshire Air Ambulance or UNICEF.
Mike
-
tbh i think that will be a good idea. :y
-
I have even set up my own Blog site so that I can update the blog whilst on the trip.
Check it out at http://ooftrips.blogspot.com/
*** My confirmed route is now on the Blog site***
Thanks

The charities have not been as willing to accept the money as I had thought they would be?
I am suprised :-?
I thought if you sent a cheque to any charity.......they would just cash it...and possibly send you a thankyou letter.... :-/
If i had to choose a charity it would be NSPCA and Cancer Research....actually would have to think about NSPCA......coz i used i used to have a DD to them every month for a tenner......ok not a lot....but some cheeky tinker phoned me up and asked if i would like to double the amount >:(.......so I cancelled the DD on principle.
BTW Mike......what if i dont have an Omega next year? Actually its highly unlikely i will.
-
Sure, you can just send a cheque in to any charity and they'll take it, but I was after some kind of support / help in the organisation.
As for the run in a non Omega, that's up to you mate :)
I've put my route on my blog now, so you can see where we are going.
Thanks
Mike
-
i'm out. wont be coming on the trip.
-
Why, what happened mate?
-
It seems it's easy to upset some people...
oh well!
-
at happened with him?. :-?
-
I`ll be up for it.Im only about hour and ahalf away from lands end
-
Bear in mind though mate that puts you about 15 hours from john o groats and when you get there, you've got to come back too :)
Mike
-
not a prob at all.iv driving to scotland and back in 2 days before
-
I 'MAY' be up for this if I can join in half way?

Good luck guys.. As for charitys they are a nightmare to raise money for!! belive it or not. i run an event each year called Porscheball ( www.porscheball.com ) first year we raised money for the British Heart Foundation it was a pta.. now we just go have fun without the fund raising. As for big company's sponsoring you you will have no chance as they get loads of requests every day. If you have someone in the club high up in a big company you would have a better chance. Road rally's (which this is) can be a night mare with insurance if you start to put sponsors logo on your cars. they then say you are on a road rally and your insurance is void!!! My company arrange trips for clubs to the Nurburgring in Germany, most start off by trying to do their trip for charity but in the end give up! its a strange world. So i would say forget the charity forget sponsorship and just go and enjoy yourselfs. I would love to come with you guys but sadly i'll be at the Nurburgring [smiley=cheesy.gif] Rob.
-
good point about the insurance H.Boy. may be more hassel than its worth. as you say just go & have fun. :y
-
Yeah, I agree about the charities being a pain to deal with.
This being the case, I would propose doing the run just to sse the sights and travel with some like minded people.
I am proposing that the trip be:-
August the 14th, we will make our way to Lands End
August 17th - Drive from Lands End to Ilfracombe
August 18th - Drive from Ilfracombe to Lechlade
August 19th - Drive from Lechlade to Ashbourne
August 20th - Drive from Ashbourne to Kendal
August 21st - Drive from Kendal to Bryness (Friday)
August 22nd - Rest Day
August 23rd - Drive from Bryness to Aberfoyle
August 24th - Drive from Aberfoyle to Fort Augustus
August 25th - Drive from Fort Augustus to Helmsdale
August 26th - Drive from Helmsdale to John O' Groats
Total trip 1054 miles.
I have lost track of woh's in and who's out, so lets go for it again. Copy and paste and add your name...
1) Mike213735, with Wife, 12 year old daughter and 2 year old son.

Having participated in (but not organised) a few tours and the like you should also be a little careful about the legalities involved in organising such a trip, IMHO.
If you intend to publish anything (a road book or similar) it should be more from the perspective of suggesting particularly scenic routes that tourers might like to absorb rather than a set of rally pace notes and there should be a big section at the front in bold type reminding participants that it's a group of like minded car enthusiasts getting together for a scenic drive on public roads in full compliance with the highway code and not a race.
It would also be courteous, in addition to covering the organisers to an extent, if you informed the police forces whose territories you are passing through of what you are doing. You don't have to tell them exactly where you'll be at a given time but if they have been given prior warning it would be to your advantage if anyone got the hump IMHO.
I was participating in such a tour the weekend before last and, because the organiser had informed the local police they were able to warn him that there was a large cycle race also taking place on the same roads that he had proposed to cover on one of the days.
It was obviously desirable to avoid mixing a couple of hundred cyclists and 30 or 40 quick sports cars on twisty country lanes, and fortunately this allowed us to change our schedule to minimise the risks to all.

If you're willing to allow a jag take part I would be willing (afghan dates dependant of course ;)

Count me in on this one plenty of time to save for the fuel you never know fuel might come down to 89p a litre ;D ;D ;D

dream on :P
i might be up for this come next year but depends on funds as im interested in doing the nurburgring track day trip
could put the money raised towards charities and also the upkeep of the site unless you dont want to give money for the upkeep of the site lol!
-
I wont be able to do the whole trip but I may join you guys for a few of the legs. Looks like I will be on a '2 week break' from work if I do make it and of course you all know which charity I would be supporting :y
-
you never know fuel might come down to 89p a litre ;D ;D ;D
It certainly has.....making the trip even cheaper!!
-
If no charities involved now can we join 'en route ie if in midlands can we do the top half & back? 8-)
-
That's right. I had too much hassle from the charities so it has now become more of a fun run. If anyone wants to join for any part of the stint feel free. Likewise, if you want to pop along to one of the overnight stays you are more than welcome to share our BBQ and a drink.
-
il see if i cant russle up a couple of 3.2 cop cars for the trip to head and tail the convoy. you never know couple of forces may indeed head us for a while on request, would look good picture in total vauxhall etc!
-
You are not going to believe this, but I'm afraid I can't make this run now. I am unable to get the holiday from work as I need to cover someone at work that has booked the holiday before me :(
Mike
