Title: Oxford Meet no.2
Post by: joshwyatt on 12 April 2010, 13:25:24
I could try and take all the credit for thinking it was about time, but it was actually TB...but I'll just pretend it was me  :D
So another Oxford meet, anyone is welcome.
Date TBC, if we can find a date that fits with as many people as possible would be ideal.
I'm able every weekend, so if people tell us when they can't do it I guess we can find a date most people can attend.
I'm not sure actually where it'll be, last time it was opposite my house  ::)
Good for me, but maybe not for others who have to travel.
So, any suggestions would be good.

I'm up for it, date dependent (running out of weekends in May/June/July/August).

Location, I'm easy.  Be it a nice country pub with large garden (if its nice), or a country park type place and we take a BBQ - that worked well at the Asheridge meet last summer.  Tunnie and I did consider Wendover Woods, but thats Pay and Display (but very picturesque, and a few things for people to do - walks, kids playing in woods, there is a high rope type thing, small tea room, kids playground etc)

Or must be plenty of places by the rivers/canals - we have Thames, Windrush, Grand Union Canal all in mid/North Oxfordshire.

I've been trying to find pictures of your 3.2 in service, but haven't had much luck. I'm sure one will turn up though, but it'd be definitely good if you could make the next meet.

So, it looks like we'll hopefully have a good turn out.
Now we just need to try and organise a place and time.
I've often thoght Cutteslowe park would be quite nice, it's about 2 miles from Oxford city centre.
There will be enough parking, there's a nice lake and garneds, fields, play area for children and a model railway you can ride.
But again, that's very local to me...it may be better for others to make it elsewhere in Oxfordshire. Any ideas? And any dates in mind?

Thats fine for me - are there facilities - toilets etc - though?

Yep, toilets there and a cafe and an Ice Cream parlour and plenty of Mr Whippy vans last time I was there. Admittedly that was some time ago, I'll go there tomorrow and see what's what and check what facilities it has etc and report back.

:D where abouts does she come from? The only place I know never to go is cowley road after dark if you want to keep your money, and more importantly your life.
Oxford city centre itself is nice too, not far too drive and there is parking if you know where to look  ::)

As an aside, Chris - I may end up getting a Phaeton in, if I've got it at the same time as the meet you're more than welcome to take it for a drive etc  :y

Mrs TheBoy comes from Horspath (nice village except for being a rat run), but originally from Cowley/Headington area.

Horspath is lovely, but can have some steep roads though, as I found out on my driving test  ;D

Went to Cutteslowe today to have a look around, it's got some parrots and assorted birds in enclosures, model railway you can ride, big park area, lake, food place and loads of ice cream vans, under cover area, childrens play area...so by all accounts a nice place and all importantly a car park we can take photo's in  ;D

Mrs TB said it would probably be a suitable venue for an afternoon meet, though then conceded that she hadn't been there for 30 years ;D

Maybe that could be Oxford Meet no.3, a contest to see who can get the furthest up the bridle path?  ::)

That's a good question Simon...not really sure. But hopefully a date will be sorted very soon, be good if you could make it! How's the ute coming along? Be nice if you could bring that, or even the police Omega  ::) although I don't think an OOF meet counts as a PVEC approved show  ::)

Would Saturday the 1st of May be a suitable date for all?
I really don't mind when it is, so thought I may as well just pick a date, that's one week tomorrow...does anyone need more notice? Can make it two weeks tomorrow if that makes it easier?

That's a good question Kai, I've only ever used the entrance if you drive from Kidlington to Oxford city centre...opposite 'five mile drive'
I'm not sure which would be better?

Ok, so let's set the date for the 1st. It's a shame you can't make it Paul, but hopefully I'll get to meet you soon  :y
I think what I'll do is take some photo's of where exactly it is we're meeting for those members who don't know where it is, and the postcode etc.
Alternatively, we can meet at mine and we can go in convoy to Cutteslowe, it's only an 8 minute drive, if that.

TB - I'll get an aerial shot done  :y
I'd thought about 1ish would be a good time.
There is food there, but probably not an extensive choice.
How about if we first meet up at the black horse (same pub as last time) then drive up to cutteslowe for the afternoon. It's only 3 miles to cutteslowe.
We could meet at even 12.30ish at the pub, have some lunch then trundle up to Cutteslowe.
What would everyone prefer?

12.30 ish would be a good time I think.
Last time there was a cafe, it had all day breakfasts, pies, chips, sanwiches etc.

Hopefully this link will work, ignore the supplied post code...

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=ox5+1aq&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.510541,28.168945&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Kidlington,+Oxfordshire+OX5+1AQ,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.790966,-1.26611&spn=0.00588,0.021887&z=16

To the west is Wolvecote Cemetery.
At five mile guest house, turn right. So you're not going up five mile drive, you're going to the road opposite. There is a mini RA down that road, you will see signs for Cutteslow Park.
I'll add more links and photo's in a minute, but thought I'd post this for the moment.
Title: Re: Oxford Meet no.2
Post by: joshwyatt on 29 April 2010, 21:44:58
Ok, second link

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=ox5+1aq&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.510541,28.168945&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Kidlington,+Oxfordshire+OX5+1AQ,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.791628,-1.265761&spn=0.000735,0.002736&t=h&z=19

This is an aerial shot of the car park. So, you'll need to turn down Harbord Road, oppostie Five Mile drive.
Approach the RA, and go straight over (2nd exit) and continue along Harbord Rd, there will be a speed bump, and on the left a small to medium sign welcoming you to Cutteslowe park. On the right is the first car park, tarmaced, we will be meeting here.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to use an Omega, I will be driving a black Mercedes-Benz E-Class (MX54 ZGW) I had wanted to use an Omega, as it is OOF...but the red one has run out of MOT.

Those using a sat nav, does anyone want the postocde for Harbord Rd?

I think it's best if we meet at the park, TB rightly pointed out it may be confusing and there's always the possibility of losing someone.
So we'll be meeting at the park, at 1pm.
I was thinking 12.30 originally, but 1 may be better.
If anyone gets lost, or is unsure when they get there, give me a call. 07913 914853
Not bothered about my number on an open forum, it's on ebay and autotrader and not yet ever had an unwanted call  :D

I've ordered a new belt from autovaux ( got from this forum) on next day delivery but  one of the tensioners has sheered off I assume due to seizing so you were spot on. so I need to get one of those now also   :'(

and thanks for the offer but unless you have a spare tensioner also I'm still screwed  :(

Thats the advantage of having a spare Omega parked on my driveway ;).

If I get out of my pit early enough, I'll whip it off in the morning and bring it along, and you use until you get your bits.  Just return it to me in Brackley at some point.

A big thank you to all who attended today - It was an excellent meet, it was good to meet some new faces aswell, thank you for making the trip  :y

Next time we'll move the venue nearer to some of the other members so they don't have to travel as far.

And I look forward to seeing Ian's photo's...and one of those includes me sitting on the roof of my car, (don't ask)  :D

And, I'd also like to thank TB for his Tech 2 and investigation work on my Omega, it was much appreciated. I think every member found something for him to do, check or look at  ;D

Great afternoon / evening all  and good to meet you all - thanks Josh for kicking it off.
...and as promised - here we are. Password this time is LOAF2 (you do the maths).
http://www.cig.canon-europe.com/p?p=BXxiLcrrsez

Now - we all know what an Omega looks like - so I've tried to be a bit more creative this time as we didn't really have the space to start re-arranging the car park.
Hopefully I've done everyone proud - sorry Kai - I never really got a clean shot at yours as it spent most of the afternoon with its arse in the air - bit like TB and Chris...
The pictures should be available for you to dowload if you wish - or if you have problems let me know and I'll e-mail you the file.
Opportunity for some captions if you want to have a bit of fun - I just wasn't quite quick enough to get the shot of TB with his head between Chris's legs...damn.
Enjoy.

Cheers
Ian.

Thanks for a great time, really enjoyed it.

chrisgixer, Mrs G, Mrs TB and I went off for a curry afterwards, had 'fun' on the roundabouts (both had a bit of 'slippage' on the same roundabout ::)), and rounded off the evening by watching the entertainment laid on by the curry house - after I'd been saying all evening that the most exciting thing to happen in the town was Mrs Smith dropping a stitch whilst knitting.

Cheers all - by the way Nitro - the yellow effect picture IMG_3687 is your car.

Here's mine:
#1 TB calls for backup to help sort Kai’s squeaky brakes “Hello – Pizza Express – yes - make that a 12” deep pan with extra chillies and pepperoni....”

#2 Chris “yes just as I thought – there’s a bl**dy mouse stuck to the brake pad – must have been all that copper slip. Give us a slice of pepperoni TB – that’ll sort it..”

#3 Joshwyatt “come on TB – look at it - you know the engine alone is worth 750 – one careful WPC driver – what more could you ask for”

#4 Josh “ you can only have another look if you give me a biscuit – if you give me two I’ll sit on the roof “

#6 Josh “'dangle berries'..!”

#5 Kai’s squeak finally sorted – the answer to drive it with the boot open and the offending mouse removed..

Hi all,
I was so impressed by my originals  ::) - I've done a - shall we say - signature set here too.
Maybe not everyone's taste - but there's a distinct profile of the Omega's that make them unmistakeably er .. :-/ well  :-/ Omega shape ! ..enjoy.
Happy to put the link up in the Gallery section if you want  :question  :y
