Hiya Chaps
As Some Of you know we Recorded on of the Cam Belt changes on Sat but it ended up getting far to dark to continue the filming.
Had a Chat to James on Sat about Doing a Recording of a cam belt Change of an Engine out of its bay so that everything could be seen and the angle would not be naff.
I would really like to film with two cameras all the How To's. I can and make a kind of Hains DVD Manual This is going to take some time to finish the whole thing but i really think it would be worth it.
Also Once finish We could sell it on Ebay for a good price and a reduced price for members of the forum.
I think a good old list of things that would be needed from Advanced to beginner would be good.
I know there is a list in another post about the Breathers.
What Do You Think ?

As someone who's yet to tackle most Omega jobs I'd cetainly be interested in a DVD. That sort of thing would probably sell well on EBAY too, and at very little cost once the initial effort has been made. (especially as there is no book for the facelift and the pre-facelift one appears to have been illustrated using any old engine, not necessarily Vauxhall).
I don't really have a feel for how many "jobs" can be fitted onto a DVD. I think we should prioritise them and see what is likely to fit. Top of the list should be the common problems and maintenance issues that are unique to the Omega like cam belt, breathers, cam cover gaskets, rear brakes. If we've still got space, common mods and routine servicing tasks should go on there too.

I am not convinced that it would be benficial to do it on a removed engine as its not a real work scenario......its this approach which makes the haynes so poor....

Hummmmm Maybe Your Right Mark.

I'd agree with that, especially on these engines that take up 99% of the engine bay - most of the work I've had to do so far is disconnecting things that are in the way and then putting them back in again properly - however, that kind of DVD would be a godsend and it should definitely be done :y

On a side note, yesterday my house mate installed 2x 500 Watt Halogen lamps, and 2x 36w strip lights, my garage now looks like the sun from a distance at night / something out of close encounters - perhaps some uber lighting like that would help the filming?

Craig, how does the video look at the moment?? got any still shots from it so we can see how dark it is?
-
Actually on reflection, I agree with Mark... more beneficial with engine in the bay, so you can see ancilliaries removed etc etc....

Its Alittle Dark Tunnie and Gets Darker As the Night Rolls In But I am Doing Some Brightness Correcting.
As Soon As I have Alittle More To Show Ill Compress it to A Smaller Video File And Put It on My FTP Site so you can down load it and have a look, I am Alittle Busy At Work At the Mo and Have Not had Much Time To do Much Of the Editing, But Ill Get there :y

I would suggest showing it done in the engine bay with edited in shots of a bench mounted engine for clarity

Should be able to get clear enough in engine bay, esp 4 pot....

Was going to suggest removing the radiator so the camera angle can be a little less acute for some of the shots. Then I remembered the air con condenser. ::)
Anyone in need of a condenser change anyway?

Yep I think Martin Imber said it best good cut away shots showing where the bits go and how they go in from an engine out of the bay but most of the filming fom an engine in the bay, just need a strip light i think down the bottom end of the engine to throw more light on the darker areas

Please could you let me have the first look at the film.. before releasing the link on the forum... :)
-
Ill not be releasing it on the forum James, not until i get everyone approval since we never got to finish the filming of the putting back together i dont want people starting the job of replacing the cam belt and then get stuck because the whole job was not filmed.
But Yep of course ill send you a link or a copy mate no problems

:D sounds like a great idea! The trouble with nearly all modern cars is the sheer amount of pipes/cables etc in the engine bay, not like the old days..... ::)

Yes! Do it do it. This would solve a lot of problems for members that do not have a haynes manual or have access to one. This would also be good for the novice as some parts of the engine can look alien to some people if they don't know what they are doing.
I would certainly buy one from yourselves if and when you get it sorted out. I would like to know how to remove the doors from the car as well, so apart from doing the important parts of the engine maintanence you could also do one for body panels as well. Do two dvd's of the Omega manual just like the haynes but in real life. Best idea someone has come up with, you could also put a copyright on it if it hasn't been done already!!

count me in, i will have a copy ill pay the earth cheeper than vauxhall lol ;D
