Title: Good deal or not
Post by: omegod on 30 June 2009, 19:55:30
My secretary has been running a 04 BMW mini( 50k on the clock) for a couple of years, the extended warranty ran out 2 weeks ago and guess what happened..............Power steering pump went, it's a well known fault with minis.

She was about to accept the inevitable and pay £800 for a new one from BMW but I asked did she mind if I had a go at negotiating on her behalf which she didnt.

The car went in for a diagnostic which confirmed the pump was knackered but also threw up the fact that the gearbox was on its last legs( cue her saying " I wondered what the grinding noise was " ;D) and also needed replacing at £1200 plus labour, not including a new clutch at £400 all + vat.

All in about £2400+, after several days of banter with BMW they have settled on her making a £450 contribution towards the total cost of the repairs.

I feel it's a good result as it is 5 years old and definately out of warranty, she seems happy what do you think?

But you should not be getting those sort of bills on a 50,000 mile 5 year old car.  >:(

I love the fact that this is the new 'built properly' mini from BMW. 50k? Thats a joke, it really is.

Well done on a fantastic deal, by the way.

I think you've done really well there.

However if that hadn't worked, you could have tried the Sales of Goods Acts which states 'must be fit for purpose' and 'last a reasonable amount of time'.

Now there is no hard and faster rule on what is reasonable. But for the cost of a small claims court session is worth the risk, or would have been if you hadn't sorted it.

Well done mate, nice bartering.

I think you did very well there. :y

Could have become a long and drawn out matter but didn't, the contribution that the owner was required to make was worth it on that basis alone :y

It's nice to get a satisfactory result for a change without the need for shedding blood. :)

Not a great advertisement for the Mini brand all the same :-/ :-/  Like so many things today, a case of appearance over function :(

A bit of good news for a change :).
I'd get it done quick though before they change their minds as they might be suffering from the heat ;D.
