Title: Well the Astra didn't last long...
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 02 July 2009, 16:48:34
Until I decided to, in true JV6 tradition, "Pull it's head off"  ;D

The oil loss is stupid, I have topped up with 3 litres, on 3 seperate occasions, since leaving Kevin's last Saturday.

I'm going to refurb the head and fit new stem seals at the first opportunity - may start this weekend, or the one after.

It's fine on a run, but when you idle for a while, and pull away quick, say after being sat at lights - it's embarassing!!

Still don't think it's piston rings - as it only does it after standing or idling.

What's the betting I find the cheapo stem seals in there  ::)

May look at skimming while it's off - especially being LPG'd as the extra compression may help - would appreciate advice first though  :y

Head looks easy enough to remove, I've done a 1.8 Veccy and a 1.4 Corsa, all with the same small block engine.

Removing the inlet in situ is a pain - I recall it usually comes up with the head. And there's a tricky coolant pipe to get on at the rear of the head, too  ::)

If its an 8v engine James you should have the head off and on the bench within an hour

Oh and be carefull of the LPG injectors (if its an OE system) as they did tend to pull the thread out of the manifold

Would it be really, really rotten to start a poll/book on what bit(s) get left off on rebuild ???

I suppose it would, wouldn't it ??

:)

Not having much luck lately James .... must be time for some of the "good" variety...   :y :y

Forgot a follower on a previous rebuild on my own car - one off mistake - come clean, and never live it down...

The ones to worry about, are the ones who do not admit / learn from mistakes and pretend to be perfect.

We are all human.

:o :o

Just thought back to this.

Are these "red" seals the culprit ones that didn't last, that some pen pusher at GM decided to use, to save a few pennies?

I'd like to get my hands around his neck, if so...  >:( ;D

Mine are red, and there is evidence of much leakage on the inlet valves....
