Apart from the obvious (mig) what would you say is the best car you have had?
I don't mean the best looking or the fastest but just in general the best all rounder.
I would have to say a Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 GLS on a 1986 "C" plate
-
1990 Senator 3.0 CD :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
-
My beemer :y
-
1993 Nissan 200SX S13.
Very quick and still rear wheel drive! :y
-
1956 aec 6x4 militant. 10ton cargo. ex army if that counts. :D
-
Chevette HS when I was young,Senator 3.0 24v when I was older. The only 2 cars I have had an "emotional attachment" to,for want of a better phrase.I was very sorry to see both of them go when the time came.
Despite(or maybe because of)all the work I have had to do to the Omega, which is almost equal to all the other cars I have owned combined,I have no attachment to it at all.
-
Has to be my Sierra Sapphire Cosworth, 450BHP and rear wheel drive..
Priceless :y

rover sd1 3.5 v8

1972 Mk3 Cortina 1600GT 2 door in Daytona yellow, pre facelift slopey dash model. As standard the 1600 GT's & GXL's were fitted with the 1600 pinto, L's/XL's still ran the 1600 X-flow. This one was retrofitted with a fully rebuilt 1600GT X-flow & was a minter.
Cost a pretty penny now if you could find one as good. Love 'tinas!!!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)
-
rover sd1 3.5 v8
I'm with you on the SD1's. The car that never had a chance due to BL build quality. :'(
-
My 1990 Astra GTE 8v in metallic red... loved that car. Written off outside my house by two little scrotes in a stolen escort!!! >:(

i would love another but they hold the money and are not cheap to pick up for a decent 1
-
Hmmm, difficult one. Never really had a 'bad' car.
Based purely on how long I have kept them (a sign in my book of how good a car is), I would have to say top 3 are:
Rover 25 1.6iS (9yrs)
Rover 216 GSi (5.5yrs)
Omega MV6 (5.5yrs)
I would have to concede I do miss my tractor.

.....and shite design!
Mine would be my old 1.2 Nova
-
Current Elite excepted, would have to be either my 1966 PC Cresta with bench seat and four on the floor or my 1972(?) Ventora

Rover sdi twin turbo blow through janspeed system :y

and 3 weeks to stop it in spite of fitting jag brakes!!!
brilliant motor tho!! :y

Oddly, I was thinking about the worse car, and I reckon mine was the 1.2 Nova I had. A reg one.
Motor was willing enough, but I couldn't get the seats/mirrors adjusted to be comfortable/usable.
I really ragged the tits off that car though, and it emabrrased a few drivers of supposedly superior cars, as the thing did go round corners pretty well.

No worrys with mine, 9 years of ragging, a good bit of handling and being light (900Kg) quite nippy

1981 Triumph TR7 V8 3.9 Convertible, god I miss that car :'(

Mine was reliable enough (apart from a caliper that seized one day - but then it had been locked (and lost) in the garage for a couple of years ;D).
For a 1.2 with a 4 speed box, it went really well. The trouble was, I couldn't get it comfy enough for me, so sold it after 3 months once I started to use it (it was originally Mrs TB's)
-
sold it after 3 months
Next worse was a 1.8GLSi Belmont. Again, great engine (well the first engine was ::)), but the car was just utter shite ;D
-
Audi A8 3.7, What a car, I loved it and miss it to this day :(
-
Hmmm, don't have an absolute fave, but.....
1988 Sierra XR4x4 with a tt230 kit. :-* :D :y
1986 Capri 1.6, Slow, but a great first car.
1999 Legacy twin turbo, only had it a week b4 it got nicked! >:( Good looking and so f***ing quick! The throttle response was unbelieveable!
1992 Pug 205 1.4xs, revved up as quick as a motorbike! So much fun! 8-)
That an abbreviated version of the full list, but defo my top 4.
My Mig would be in there, but I thought I'd better omit it for the purposes of this listing.
-
Opel Ascona B 1.6. ( british Vx cavalier )
very comfi and great to drive after about 6 months I droped a 1.9 engine in it even more fun :y
otherwise my 1.3 vx Viva.
-
Deffo the Omega I've had that 18 months now, and still not planning on getting rid yet!
Second longest car was my Vectra, Had that just over a year.
To put them times into perspective, Ive not even been driving 4 years yet.... ;D

Snap! The one I got was nearing the end of it's life, mechanically rock solid but you could sit at the lights and watch it rust :( And it had that classic fault of the glove boxes filling up with water, never failed to amuse me when the wife took a look inside :D
Other notable cars
Carlton 2.2CDi, loved that gearbox, so smooth.
Mk3 2.0GT Cortina, 4 door, daytona yellow, as Amigo said just loved that pre-facelift dash with rocket launcher centre console!
K5 Chevvy Blazer, 350 V8, 8-10mpg(!), the only car i've driven that scared London Taxis into giving way.
Never got to drive this one in anger, pro-street Chevvy Vega Wagon, 427 V8, tube chassis, flip front, screwed my insurance in an accident so had to sell it on.
The one I miss the most though, Mk1 Consul (sweeney shape) 3.0GT. Pulled like a train, no rust, absolutely lovely condition, until some scroat pulled out in front of me from a T-junction. Cant believe she looked up and down the road twice then pulled out when I was right on top totalled her Escort, pushed the inner wing back on mine and two garages said no hope of pulling it straight :(
-
Either my 2.0 GLi E reg Carlton or my tuned 1.6 Sunbeam.
-
1988 Sierra XR4x4 with a tt230 kit still have one only havent driven it for 8 yrs, waiting to be painted. good car
92 astra vx d 1.7. no bother for 60,000m and scraped at 245000m. no room for it.
83 mk2 2.3 granda, must comphy car i have ever sat in, even on southern roads. went everywhere and never missed a beat
-
my 79 pontiac firebird i loved that car should never off sold it :'( :'( :'( the rumble of that v8 cant beat it

[/quote Novas? Easier to get on 3 wheels than proper Minis....yes i've tried both but never owned a Nova!!!!! ::)
-
Best all rounder, 1982 Capri 2.8 Injection. Fast and reliable (brakes not the best, rear drums). In 3 and half years spent virtually nothing on it and sold it for only £50 less than I paid. Sounded lovely aswell :) :)
-
my explod including manifold gasket leak and rotten pipes into backbox which made for a V8 sounding mig which was 'interesting' to drive sideways in the wet lol
i have to admit i ended up sideways down a dual carriageway trying to push it a bit and nearly went into a parked tranny van dropping the clutch in second when I picked it up lol!
:y
-
'91 Rover 820si fastback - extremely comfortable and spacious and felt like you were sitting on your sofa. A very relaxing drive and nothing really went wrong with it. I still miss that car.
-
Pontiac pariesienne. 5.7 Chevey Lump and tansam running gear.
looked like and old brick, and pissed all over everything on 4 wheels that tried it on. (ate 911 Turbo's for breakfast and would spin the wheels on kick down @90mph)
handled nicely as well, put it on 215/60VR15 P6's
Massive boot and seated 7 on the bench seats.

How did it compare to your Lotus Carlton powered Omega?
phew tough question, had it four years all told but i was young free and single :y so could afford to run it quite hapopily alongside my mk11 zodiac convertible,
performance wise for its day it was stupidly fast, it once left bicester with four of us in it, to get to middlencheney golf course in 20mins to make out tee times, it made it but the brakes were on fire, as i was informed by a rather snooty gentleman who ran in the proshop after we abandoned the car in the car park to sign in!! :o i had only fitted new pads the day before!!! :'(
out of the two think i would say the monstermeega would have been the better car in spite of it being horrendous insurance wise ;D it was just so unexpected for a 2.0gls to be doing 150plus with absolute ease!!! but the rover will always have a place in my all time great cars!!
-
Fav car is the omega
Not had many cars, but the best was probably my old Astra estate I had from new,
1.8, all the toys, built to my spec as a company car, would have bought it at the end if it hadnt been so rather unlucky :'(
-
About 5 years ago I had a 1991 Audi S2 coupe. Fantastic motor. Had it professionly chipped by someone on the s2forum to 260bhp. Fitted 18" RS6 Alloys. Car only cost me £2500 and was stupidly fast. Very Very Underated Machine.
But amazingly that wasn't my favourite. I can't explain why but when I was 19 (1994) i brought a 1985 Vauxhall Carlton (MK 2 I think). It was a lowly 1.8GL Saloon in an interesting shade of browny orange. It had 140,000 miles on it and it was spotless. I loved that car, by far the best armchair I ever had. Sold it to a taxi driver who took i up to 320,000 miles with a recon engine.
Worst Car. A 1998 Daewoo Nubira 2.0CDX Estate. What an utter pile of c**p. No exageration, that thing was in the garage every 2 weeks!!! It was bloody quick though, I still remember the copper telling me he had never seen one accelerate through 100mph so easily :y, before he gave me the ticket that banned me for a month :( :(. (In my defence it was a company car, I didn't have any choice)
-
erm..Bugatti..not sure though ;D
-
erm..Bugatti..not sure though ;D
yes - for me it was a toss up between the Bugatti or the Maclaren.... oh hang on , that was last night in the land of nod ;D
For me it was the MG Maestro that I had on loan while waiting for my Mk2 Cavalier. It was an ex company car and had been ragged well run in by its previous keeper. Despite all its design faults (couldn't change a tape when in 5th gear!) it was a real hoot to drive.

Shite design? I think not. The design was cock on it was the build quality that let the SD1 down. Granted the 4 cyl engines had head issues at 30k but did'nt the first FWD Cavs????
If some one else built the SD1 it would've been the pearler it always had the potential to be. A good twin plenum Vitesse will give any Mig a run for it's money in terms of speed & comfort (If you can find one) but it will & sounds even better.
We'll never agree on cars will we?!!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
My current miggy.
If I discount my mig it would have to be my 2.0 CDXi Carlton I was sad to get rid of it, it had a bad tin worm infection
-
A few years ago i had a 740 BMW , did everything apart from wipe your a**e ..... loved it and maybe one day i'll get another .... people used to think i was mad cause of the fuel consumption but i was lucky if i did 3000 miles a year then .... :y

This is a difficult one, I love the Veccy GSI I have now. However, I really have a soft spot for a D reg VW Scirocco I used to own. I can't explain it, it's completely illogical. It leaked petrol, was flooded up to the windows and was a bit ropy inside. I've got to say though, one of the best handling cars I have ever driven! More than once I took a corner too fast and I was eye-ing up which object was the best to hit, but the car took it with a 'and?' attitude! The speedo went to 120mph, however on a private road I had to the needle stop (estimated 130mph need stop) and it stayed there! Might I add it was only a 1.6.
Very surprisign car, unfortunately although I like the new one, it's just not the same as before. THe old one had character, the new one looks like an alfa on the back and every other VW from the front. Topped off by the limited choice in colours and engines and the new one is low down my list.
Boo.

gti engineering converted mk 2 golf re2000 :y

i got to be truthful my 3.5 sd1 is my best car i just love the comfort the shape and that v8 sound she still makes me smile :) at least there is one thing about the sd1 glove box and boot filling with water if you ever get stuck in a desert or the engine boiles you will have plenty of water with you lol :D
-
I'd say, apart from the mig, it'll have to be my beemer - 2006, 330i coupé cabriolet (still got it) :y
-
rover sd1 3.5 v8
Hey Nick. I was just thinking my old Rovers when your post came around :) :)
Yup defo my Rover SD1 V8's, very reliable, extremely spacious & if driven steady :D good on juice :y :y
I'd have another too, but it would have to be the MK I 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) Arh the memories ::) ::)
-
1. 1972 Datsun 240z Coupe, owned 1978-82, wish I still had that car as was mint, £ appreciated by now and sought after! [smiley=cry.gif]
2. 1975'ish Saab 99L 2.0L Coupe owned 1997-99, restored, nightmare car though!
3. Morris Traveller - cant remember the year now but it had moss and grass growing on the wood bits. Useful for transporting sheep. Mucho character, much loved, fell to bits. RIP.
Motorbikes... no don't get me going :D
-
Well had a lot of cars, and drove many more so difficult to decide.
Some might laugh but my favourite was Lancia Delta.
Road holding was like a train on tracks, and never ever broke down.
-
My second a 1971 BMW 2002 Tii - splendid little car 8-) 8-)

My previous 1992 E34 BMW 520i. 190K miles and not a single leak, creak or squeak! Drivers seat was worn through and the front arches were a little rusty, but it drove like a dream. A bit more power and it would have been perfect. Still see the chap I sold it to out and about in it sometimes :o :)
-
It seems most people are on a nostalgia trip here!
The best car you have ever had is probably the one you have now. I know mine is. Unfortunately it isnt the Mig ... Its my beloved Merc. its brilliant, it is superbly engineered and a joy to drive. Sorry. I'll get my coat :-[

My second car in 1989 was a Rover SD1. Wanted a V8 but only managed a 6cyl (2300). Sold it after 12 months as I was always spending money on it :(
-
Would have to be my first car a Standard 8 fitted with super gold seal engine,I got it by P/X ing my Sunbeam S8 /Swallow combination. Those were the days, now gone and mostly forgotten ;) :y
-
Value for money was my old Ford Cortina, never let me down. My wifes Focus has been great 1.8TD estate great all rounder. It certainly would not be this sodding mig - Money pit! >:( ;D
-
My 2.8i Capri's still have a special place for me, but when Mrs. Loo-knee was learning she spotted a little car she liked.
A Yugo 45A.
But laugh all you like it was the best car in the terms of you didn't care about it, I had 800 weight of flags in the back, filled a B & Q trolley to the brim and when the bloke asked if I would like to bring the car around so he could fill it I had to smile... every bit went in.. you should have seen the coppers face when I was the only person in our road who said he had locked the car when they had all been broken into ;D leaving just a few wires daggling, best thing was the cassette didn't work ;D ;D
Just had loads of fun in it too :y
-
Veccy b 1.8 ls saloon on p plate....I got a load of Irmscher kit exhaust, wheels, interior bits and bobs and then sold her so i could buy the miggy....Shes still running round wolvo and looks as good as the day i got her.....I`m very jealous too... ;D ;D
