Title: V6 Timing belts
Post by: Brick Tamland on 29 July 2009, 15:21:55
My dads v6 needs a new timing belt, opel want nearly 1000 euro to change it :o

Anyway they said there's 3 different types for a 2.5 :-?
How do I tell which is the right type, and are the one's on ebay any good? :-/

It goes off engine number.
Straight forward to change it yourself though. And you need a locking kit.

And there are 2 types for a 2.5....with the break point being around late 1997.

Not a big issue in reality as the only main difference is the tensioner backing plate which can be re-used.

The belts are all the same. Its the tensioners that are different. You need to make sure that you get a kit C/W tensioner and idler pulleys to suit your engine number and NOT just the belt

You will need access to a locking/timing tool kit and a big spanner (30mm? - can never remember if its 30 or 32mm)

No there not, its the back plates that the tensioner and upper idler sit on that are different....and as said, can be re-used.

OK then, the tensioner assemblely is different. Why buy the wrong kit?
