Title: V6 Passat Cambelt
Post by: Lazydocker on 29 August 2009, 13:47:31
Has anyone changed a VW Passat V6 cambelt before?

Just wandering if there's a special locking kit requirement and any hints/tips?

TIA

Doesn't the whole front end have to come off for those?

Don't think so... Seems to be enough room but if it does they're actually quite easy to get apart :y :y

Maybe the Skoda Superb is what I'm thinking of, but aren't they practically the same car?

1999 on a V plate... It's a 2.8 4motion but don't have the engine code to hand

LSG I believe the whole front needed to be taken apart for the cambelt change for TDI models only. not the petrol ones

Changed the radiator on my wifes 1999 MK4 Golf this morning. A previous owner must have driven into a low bollard or concrete post so I have been waiting for an excuse to straighten out the brackets on the bumper.

It all came apart surprisingly easily and left me with totally unrestricted access to the front of the engine.

Don't know if that helps :-?

Just reread the OP. Cambelt will probably require removal of the drivers side engine mount, it did on the Golf and I assume it does on most transverse engine FWD cars with cambelts.

Passat isn't transverse. TDI needs front removal, not sure about V6. Why not take it out and flush the system anyhow. I always fit a new water pump when doing cambelts so you could make sure the cooling system is tiptop.

Thanks for that... Seems that the front only needs pulling forwards to aid access so we'll see! Interesting to see a book time of 3.30 as she's getting it priced by a "specialist" because it may be the cause of some engine faults... I'll see whet he's going to charge before I volunteer as I've got enough on my plate at the moment! ::) ::)

So why make it wrong wheel drive - seems like the ideal opportunity for a proper drive layput :-/

This one isn't... It's 4WD, biased slightly to the rear and great fun when it's going ::) ::) :y :y
