I've had a problem this week with my Transit Van and thought I'd ask if any of you have any ideas. I've asked on a Transit Owners Forum and even after 55 reads no one has offered any advice or help.
'01 2.0 FWD 69K miles 75 ps owned and driven by myself for 6 years
Recently it has felt that the turbo wasn't boosting ,that little push has been missing although van running OK otherwise. Today after I floored the throttle to see if the turbo would kick in it has started to choke and miss severely when on anything other than light throttle. Doesn't cut out or anything but it is very unpleasant to drive. No smoke from exhaust when throttle fully opened but wont rev .One other thing I have noticed is an acrid " taste " in the back of my throat of diesel smoke in the cabin .I've checked all hoses etc in engine compartment but no fault found.
This falling off of performance has coincided with the van going through the annual test over here where they rev the engine on the limiter twice to check emmissions !!!!!!!
There was significant oil muck deposits on the pipe going into the manifold from the EGR when I had to detach it recently, see photo, and although I removed all that I could I'm wondering if the EGR is choked ? or if there is any other component that would cause these symptoms.

Sounds like EGR to me... Have encountered those problems on a few Transits :y :y

Here's the culprit...........Air Filter
Found that the rubber O ring is missing between the two halves of the air box and I think the two haves were not seated properly, (didn't really take much attention prior to opening it up though ) I guess it's because I wash and hose the van down every night and the water has been getting in through the gap somehow. Now how that happened I cannot say 'cause I do all the servicing on it and the airfilter was changed 5 thousand miles ago but it was in the local garage about 6 weeks ago getting stabiliser mounts welded after I found them cracked and the fact that the airbox is much much dirtier than all the other components on the engine makes me wonder..............Anyway did the EGR and checked all the vacuum hoses at the same time ,what a filthy job , so all is tickity boo again......

Well seems my suspicions were correct.
I had a closer look at the remains of the filter and after realising that is wasn't the same make as the one I fitted ,which had a blue seal , and was obviously older than 5 K miles , I also checked the moulding dates on the airbox and discovered that the manufacture was 4-04 . I've had the van for six years so ??????
I'll ask some questions in the garage tomorrow but tread carefully as I know the Foreman and one of the three mechanics very well.
What a shame . :(

...sounds disappointing Olympia :( but maybe there's a reasonable explanation :y

its not good, mine never goes to garages, how do any couple with two newish car on average wages afford to use garages? we couldnt so its a good job i was taught how to, by the old man. and also in a way so as to learn and adapt.
is this a lost skill, home servicing etc?

I understand fully what you are saying . I ran company cars for 25 years in UK prior to moving over here and have to say that on the whole the servicing was appalling ,I could quote horror stories from a wide range of makes.....
I service and repair all our vehicles where I can and if it is economically viable which gives me the satisfaction that the work is done properly and with the quality of parts that I choose and source.
The van was getting two stabiliser mounts welded that had sheared and I had the garage do it only because I have run out of gas for my Mig .......
