Title: What shall i do
Post by: Kieran on 25 August 2009, 09:20:31
Advice needed please. As some of you may be aware there was an ad placed in the cars for sale for a Mint Senator that needed to be sold by the end of the month. I have contacted the person selling it and he is going to scrap it if he is unable to sell it as he is getting another car. Now considering he is getting 2000.00 from the dealer for it he will drop it to 1900.00 for me. This car is probally the best Senator around and i will risk getting in trouble with the missus who can't see the point in getting another car. Is this price still far to expensive and am i letting my heart rule my head. Please help me make the correct decision :-/

Hmm. It did look nice, and it would be a crime to crush it, but that's a lot of money for a Senator. :-/

Is he really geting £2k for it though?

How much could he have beaten the delaer down by without scrappage? A bit more, I guess, as the dealer has the hassle of arranging for it to be scrapped and a load of paperwork to claim back from the gov't.  :-/

The whole scheme stinks, TBH. I don't see the benefit of scrapping roadworthy cars with plenty of life left in them.

only you can make the call.

any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

not cheap, but I dont think its extortionate either.  and obvious motives for that price.

would be a crying shame for that to be scrapped.

its one of those cars where money isnt the prime factor.

imho, worth more than an omega, due to the rareness and overall condition of that car.

I reckon he would get that money privately, just maybe not in the timescales he wants.

He said before he had it the previous owner who is an engineer wanted to make the best Senator around and spent an awful lot of money on it replacing every nut and bolt and the exhaust with a stainless steel one. He has got the receipts as well.

You might be right. He'd be selling into a very small pool of potential buyers (i.e. Senator enthusiasts rather than people out for a comfortable, reliable, cheap car).

Then again, the threat of scrappage is a tool to use when selling to enthusiasts because of their emotional attachment to the brand.

Well I've just looked at the ad in the For sale section and quite simply if it is as good as it is described ,and you'll know within 1 minute of viewing , I'd pay that gladly .
Any Senator bought will need money spent so if you buy a £750 jobbie and it needs a new exhaust ?
or some paint done , or a little welding etc etc.
IF this car is a great one you pay less in the mid to long run and can enjoy it immediatly.
I've bought many cars to fix up in the past and by the time you get them to the condition you initially wanted ( or dreamed of ) and then count up the total cost and time / hassle involved it ALWAYS makes sense to buy the best up front.
It's a dwindling pool you have to choose from.

It has been confirmed by Omegatoy and I think others that this is a very special Senator,to my mind its worth every penny of 2 grand. If I could afford to buy it as a second occasional car  I would be there like a shot. :y

My best mate used to have one and still reckons it's one of the best motors he's ever had. I drove it (fast!!) on many occassions and loved it. :y

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT it's worth every penny and if you keep it good it will only go up in value. I would have it and take it to car shows with my better halfs Cavalier convertible but i really need an estate as i have a little one on the way.
Don't let it go :)

Still not sure. Yes it would be saving a potentially good car from the scrappy. It would also be my hobby and would be garaged most of the time. But at the end of the day is it worth it(you don't know my missus) and if kept in good condition would it really keep its value. Have to make a decision today :-/

Good luck with whatever you decide, but it is a lot of money. Have you actually tried discussing it with the missus? If the missus was ok about it would you buy it? Because if she was, then I don't think you would get a great deal of critisicm for it from anywhere else. In some respects you would have been deemed to have saved a car.

I've done this before wanted a car and not bought it and kicked myself for ages after. When do you think you would get a chance like this again to buy such a beautiful senator.

It is worth the money.you will not find another Senator as good as this one.As for your Mrs.,the only car my Mrs and I have ever agreed on was the Senny,as soon as she drove it she loved it.

Jaysus ..... what are you all thinking about over there , £1900 !!! will someone buy that car .
If it wasn't for the fact that it would cost me €1500 ( £1305 ) to road tax it in Ireland I , and several others over here , would have it sitting in my/their garage.
That is a stunning car .

And if its kept in the same condition it will increase in value the older it gets.As I said in an earlier post,if I could afford to buy it to use occasionally I wouldnt hesitate.Im actually gutted to be missing out on it. :(

Actually that is one very good point, sometimes the ladies do change their mind or calm down a bit after driving the car.

Also in order to soften the blow, go and buy her a new pair of shoes or handbag. This will lessen the impact from any potential aftermath.

Now join the Autobahnstormers if you haven't already. That's where the straight six knowledge is. And from what I've read on the ABS by Graham you should now get a proper set of ride control shockers fitted to it. I always had mine in 'C' (comfort) mode ..... SWMBO hated the boat like ride though  ::) :y
Well done on the purchase ...... I really hadn't anywhere to store it or it would be going north wst on Sunday :(

Excellent news. As said, better to buy a good'un (and by God that's the very definition of good'un) than it is to buy a cheap one and spend more doing it...

Well that's hard luck, why promise you the car then sell it to someone else?  [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

Well if you are still set on a Senator take a look here

Thanks. I have seen that one advertised but it just dosen't seem right. It has velour seats not leather as i am after and not to keen on the colour. After seeing the add for the other one it just pushed all the right buttons. To say i am in a relly bad mood now after an agreement had been made is an understatement. The guy was going to scrap it for goodness sake :'(. I suppose it has been saved but that was going to be my baby

From what have read the car may have had lots spent on it but also some strange things had happened:
The A/C compressor had been removed
The self leveling suspension disabled and uncomfortably hard shock absorbers fitted.

Not convinced myself that it really was 'best of breed'
