It certainly sounded like a lot broke... it let go near the red line ::) :D

So, what do we think was the cause of failure?

True -- he didn't cut them -- he tried to blow them off :o

Near the redline? or way beyond it :o
When I first got my manual 2.5 V6 (and being used to a motorbike with a 10500rpm redline) there were a few occasions where it hit the (soft) limiter and I glanced down at the tachometer and saw the needle pointing somewhere between 3000 & 4000.
I think what happens is that the ECU cuts the sparks (or half of them) and gives a duff reading to the tacho.
I once had a spectacular big end failure on a 60's Royal Enfield. The results looked very similar to the photos but with aluminium crankcases and con rod. I never did work out what caused it (but I was flat out downhill at the time ::))

A beano comic and some filler should do the trick :y chemical metal's too dear!
-
Patch the holes up on the crankcase and just run it as a V4 ;D :y
