Well I am going to say this the once, but there is not an infinite supply of AR35s, it will not be too long before they will be in short supply.
My suggestion is that every forum AR35 which breaks gets checked over and if possible repaired.
I can see in 5 years there being a shortage so repair them now.

We've seen a few AR35s fail recently, normally with thrust washers in the sump....

So time to rebuild them with new washers - before the scrappies run out of AR35s

You may have found a new money-maker for James. I'd certainly feel better knowing that I can get a rebuilt AR35 right away for a flat price.

I can rebuild them easily, but there is an ample supply of decent used AR35's, which is why I don't bother. Master kit is around £140 for an AR35.

It's a 3.0ltr automatic gearbox. Should not be confused with the AR25 which is a 2.5 and below auto gearbox.
The AR25 comes with an additional warning:
Do not use this box in a 3.0ltr vehicle, especially on the M4.
;) ;D

:DCheers. I mostly stick to manuals but should i be tempted otherwise i'll know. :y

There is a problem with AR35's though if they've been lying for a while. The brake bands get stuck, (yknow, a bit like your handbrake o clutch will sieze if you leave the car for a while.) and as a result won't engage drive. I've known this happen many a time with spare AR35 boxes for Senators.
Thing is though there're so many around, hardly anyone bothers repairing them.

At the moment - I have seen car parts go from plentiful to difficult in as short a time as a year.
-
Its a route I think should be explored......because second hand pars always carry a risk in as much as they are generaly unknown....adn with an autobox simply driving 20 miles on it before removal is not a sign its good (the one on my estate used to drop out of drive once a month....).
For me, I would re-build a box for my own use and fit a second hand one to a project car.....
-
With the Sunbeam it went from plentiful to very little very quickly, I needed a fixed gearbox as the scrappy ones kept going wrong. Ended up spending £100 on getting the oldest (because it was closer ratio) fully reconditioned.
I can see this happening with all cars after a while - it WILL happen with Omegas, there are not THAT many AR35s out there, many may have been made but nowhere near as many as AR25s. But oneday they wil be difficult to find, so I would start now rather than later, there is not much to go wrong, there is the washer, solenoids, brake band wear, all repairable - there are aftermarket spares, and I can see it being the easiest option in the long term.

Me too. I don't plan on needing a replacement for a while (touch wood) but when the time comes I'd rather put in one I have rebuilt and am confident in than one that came from a scrappy.
Whilst the supply of 2nd hand gearboxes might be safe for a while, the probability of a 2nd hand one being a good one will reduce in time.
OK, so we may lack the skills required to rebuild one now but we won't learn them until we jump in with both feet. I vote that someone donates a knackered AR35 to the cause next time we have a meet and we have a go at rebuilding it, taking plenty of pics and vids as we go.
