They may have all the legal markings, but they are not strictly legal as the seller isn't worried about the mundane points of current law (such as seeing photo ID and ORIGINAL veheicle reg documents).

As far as buying plates go, just about every sunday market going has a number plate stall that does them while u wait (no ID needed).

A few minor points for some very cheap plates does me fine  ;D

But though how many do actually ask for that when you buy online?

The ONLY legal get out for purchasing number plates without ID is to sign a declaration stating they are for show use/off road use only.

I can think of better ways, if their camera has trouble and they find you. Likely to pull you over.

cant see what the issue is with them then, as long as they are standard height and standard width and are spaced correctly thats all that matters imho, i have never had issues with m.o.t`s or police with plates before even when i had carbon fibre look a like lettering

Post by: tunnie on 24 October 2009, 22:18:06
technically they are illegal on paper, like HIDs without washers and sensors, but at the end of the day you can get by.

But they still can do you for it, like small number plats on bikes.

Never been pulled on the XJ since we built it (over 2 years now), and the plate on that sits somewhere between "You're having a laugh" to "You're taking the pi$$ sunshine"

As it happens, I'm doing both.
The plate being small is having the laugh, and the slogan at the bottom is the taking the pi$$ part  ;D

If the seller is across the border i.e Scotland their law regarding plates is different. They do not require proof of ownership or any ID to buy plates.
Remember in this country England,Wales it is illegal to sell plates without ID and doc's but not illegal to buy without.County flags and euroland stars were made legal to display this summer.
Regarding BS kite marks since last year, a mot station can not fail a car for not having the marks on the plates due to over 20,000 cars failing because of un-marked plates in 2 years. The law stating all plates must have the BS kite mark will be again reinstituted  from July 2010 but this may changed due to EU legation.

At the end of the day, if the plate is "sensible" (easily readable), then the old bill don't give a toss.

The current number plate laws are a joke that has cost the taxpayer £ millions.
Completely unneccessary, and completely unenforcable due to conflicting law.

I use these for making up plates for my estate http://www.yourplates.co.uk/number-plates/
Not the cheapest but very good quality, and seem thick material than some others I've used. Got mine with the Vauxhall badge in black and red. Based in Dublin, good service.
