Title: Car Insurance
Post by: pscocoa on 25 October 2009, 19:07:51
I never realised until now that you have to disclose factory fitted options to insurance i.e. even if car comes with them from new. Thought that this was taken care of by valuation of car.

So when on insurance declaration form it asks "has vehicle been modified" you have to say yes.

I thought this was just for non manfacturer fitted stuff.

On a separate point my son just picked up an SP30 - he has his own car and is a named driver on my car and my wife's car. Insurance companies are increasing quote by £60 pa on Omega and £70 pa on Signum - any chance they get to hit you!!

I've never heard that before. Where did you hear that from?

Many people wont even know if their car has options.

When they ask me if it has any optional extras I always tell them that I didn't buy it new so I wouldn't know.

Told this by elephant.co.uk which is also part of Admiral and includesBell. In fact if you go on any car insurance website and click on the info button at the side of modifications I think they will all say the same. You then get a drop down list of optional extras to click on - they told me it was to check out "eye candy" to attract thieves etc.

Kevin

Effect though that they will not pay for these optional extras - they are mainly after alloy wheels and audio hifi stuff I suppose. Remaps and chips were also in list

I can see the point totally about modifications, but factory fitted options would be really really difficult to enforce.

They made the point that they will base pay out on standard vehicle - I suppose at the age of the Omegas now it is not too relevant but if you have worked hard on your car with all sorts of bits - say irmscher parts and alloys - they ain't going to pay unless they are aware.

This is far more relevant for new cars where you have extras on from new and do not declare them up front.
I have had cars since 1969 and never heard of this before. It is logical though with the high price of extras.

I rang round recently for quotes for our cars. I enquired about the fitting of face lift alloys on my preface car (should I ever fit them ::)  ::)), and they (can't remember who ) would have wanted another £150 pa  :-? :-? :-?  I could maybe understand if they were radically different from standard, but they are ::) were Omega alloys, just from a newer car.

a few years back when insuring the wife's new car all i told them it was a 2.0 ltr special edition model and we had loads of extras fitted and all they asked was is it kept in a garage.i was told if the extras were fitted by the manufacture or the dealer the extras were classed as standard fit by insurance companies only parts fitted after this need to be declared

Another insurance issue please - if you have protected no claims bonus what is the norm as regards the number of claims before you lose it. I think twice appears to be standard but not sure  over what period of time - is there much of a difference between insurers?

It can vary, check out their conditions.

Got to bottom of issue.

I removed one driver from policy and added another. Both have unblemished records.

Got a letter from insurer saying change may prejudice my protected no claims without saying why or how.

Indian call centre completely got it wrong and tried to limit the number of claims I can make without losing protection of ncb from 2 claims to 1 claim in a 3 year period. I had to take this up with a UK call centre to day to get it agreed that it still stands at 2.

What a waste of time!!

I have just swapped my miggy mv6 for a vectra gsi.
My insurance went up by only £21, but then i told them that the stereo wasn't standard, and they tried to charge me an extra £51.
So i told them i was putting a standard one back in!!!!
