Title: EU Licence Plate
Post by: oceansoul on 10 November 2009, 12:16:48
Going to Belgium. I have an EU band thing on my number plate with the stars but with ENG. Should i get one of them stickers with the stars and GB on it, or will i be ok with ENG?

Your current plate is illegal and to be 100% legal you should have GB on your plate not ENG for driving abroad or have a seperate GB sticker

Plus there is no BSAU or maker's postcode on plates-best to just get a new rear plate with GB strip.
For a cheap fix you can buy a Blue EU+GB sticker strip on ebay which will stick over your existing strip on teh face of the plate.

Need to get GB sticker myself, too...

BS number (BSau145a, superceded by BSau145d for the pedants) refers only to the reflectivity or retroreflictivity of the plate, not its format or composition.

Like AndyB, I have taken various cars onto the continent with the Euro stars symbol with SCO beneath and no BS number and never had any grief.  Likewise, ran around the UK with a plate that had additional graphics on it which, technically, is also unlawful and never had a problem.

And thats not because of my previous occupation, its just that, I think, trafpol have much more pressing things to deal with and the local beat cops are being ran ragged with other offences with little time/knowledge to do anything about wee badges on number plates.

Wrong fonts or mis spaced - thats a different matter entirely....   ;)

Wrong fonts  ......

I'd like to know why it's not still possible to buy a plate made up with the font most of our cars were made with when new. Why do I have to have the new font on an olderer car?

My MOT tester has been telling me for a while now that technically it's an MOT failure on (IIRC) post-2001 cars for number plates not to have the postcode of the plate supplier marked on them.

He hasn't failed me yet though. ::)
