Title: Top speed in reverse.......!!!!! MV6 2.6 auto

During my normal journey to work, I have to reverse about 30 yards into a space and would I be right in thinking that my car, at full whack in REVERSE, would probably be doing about 35mph.....????

It seems to have very lengthy gearing in reverse and I reckon it would easily get up to them sort of speeds....

Anyone been mental enough to test it.....????

Isn't reverse the same as first, but reversed :D

I used to have an opel kadett E Gsi 2,0 with digi cockpit.
it showed the speed even if you were going backwards the best I had was 56 Kmh what is roughly 35mph only done it once though.

Only a fork lift truck driver could do 35 MPH in reverse and stay in control!  :)

If you are keen (or sad) enough it would be easy enough, (and much safer) to calculate the maximum reverse speed.

What they read and what they do acrosws the ground are two seperate things.

They can go quite quickly though.....   :P

Oddly enough, I haven't had the opportunity to hone those skills - but I did have to slap 4 new tyres one  ::)

I don't know the ins & outs of an Auto, but i was told that in a manual the reverse gear is just first reversed. That was by a gearbox specialist some years back. I don't know so i'm going on what i was  told. I'm not an expert ;)

If you really want some fun, get a bike engined kit car with a separate reverse box. 6 speed sequential in reverse with a 13k RPM red line, any one?  ::)

Not so easy to snick it back into a forward gear in the middle of a J turn though. So I'm told.

So looking at the auto, what ever speed you could achive in 1st it looks like reverse is 20%ish slower.

I don't normally look, but say 6.5K rpm upshift point divided by 2.40 and then 3.90 gives you 694 RPM at the wheel.

A 235/45/17 does 796 revolutions per mile so to get MPH: (694/796)*60 = 52 MPH.  :o

In practice, it would depend what the torque converter is doing, although at those engine speeds it should be pretty much solid.
