Title: mig welder prob
Post by: unlucky mark mv6 on 16 November 2009, 19:24:20
Just been given a mig welder by my mate, but he says it doesent have the power it had when new,do you reckon it could be the voltage regulator thats gone, and if so how much for the part. :y

Mine's done exactly the same - only a little SIP 100A welder, but cheaper to get a new welder in my case.

I'd go for at least 150 amps next time though. :y

If it works but only partially, my guess would be one of the rectifier diodes gone, assuming it's not an inverter type.

Indeed, rectifier diode would be the favourite but, do check the earth clamp and cables plus the cable connection to the torch feed.

Also be aware that you cant get more than about 135amp off a welder powered from a 13amp plug.

Also note, SIP are about the worst hobby MIG and have very poor wire feeds.

Stripped it down last night, and sucked all the dust out,and sprayed everything with wd40.Also redone the earth connection on the clamp, which was only hanging on by a few strands, and tried it,and seems to work great now. :y

Indeed it is, and good to hear you did it!! :)
Mine just Flatulence and spits out some wire at very low amps now.
I think I can almost pronounce it dead.
There will be a small, respectful and dignified service this weekend.
No flowers please, but donations to.................

*EDIT* you can't post the word 'F-art' on here? Hahahahaha!!!! ;D ;D ;D

SIP ones suffer 2 key problems (I have found).

1) The torch connection gets loose and the wires fray (easy to fix)

2) The wire feeds are rubbish

No 2 can be improved but not fixed
