Title: camping with an Omega Sedan
Post by: pembroke on 21 November 2009, 19:48:22
HI,

I recently purchased a X reg cdx sedan to replace my volvo v40. We'll use the car for camping and I need advice on roof rails, roof boxes and bike racks that work with the sedan.

Any advice from fellow campers would be great!

Thanks. ;D

We camp but we leave the kids behind so it's just us 2 and the stuff. Did the shores of Loch Ness this year  :y

Me and her had a few cracking holidays using a Carlton GSi, including a couple on the continent.

Large boot, large back seat area and put a roof box on to carry the tent, camping gas etc etc.  No great probs, provided you take the time to pack correctly, as neither of us like to do a lightweight backpacking job, preferring a full size tent with comfy lounging chairs and a table to eat meals from....   ;)

I've got one just didn't fancy towing a tin box up the A74(M), I've pulled a 44 ton 45 footer up there enough to know what it does to lighter trailers ;D ;D

The man wants to go camping, not sell burgers on the truck stops of the A43  ;D

I shall need to look at roof boxes soon, what with LPG tank in the boot. They can be mega expensive, think i will keep an eye out for second hand ones!

Or aluminium sandwiched with GRP and aluminium extrusions in a brand new design.

Boot space or lack of it, is a main dis-advantage for me for LPG  :-/

Why would i need to fit in one when driving?  ;)  :P

I actually only use the full capacity of the boot once or twice a year, when camping (3 of us) the boot was rammed, rear passenger seat which was spare would be piled high in tesco supplies.

My main concern is how to fit my snowboard in, a roof box will be the only way, as long as i find a big enough one. I usually like to squeeze in a snowboarding road trip trip to Landgraaf in the summer  8-)

Big 4 person tent, air beds, sleeping matt, my feet can stick out the end! I am more comftable in a tent than in a burger van. None of the bloody things are designed for the 6ft5 man  >:(

I remember seeing an Over 75 estate pulling an Erdé trailer up past Metalbridge and I'll swear that the tyres didn't touch tarmac for nearly a mile, then just bounced and hovered again! Took me 3 or 4 miles to get him to pull over so I could tell him!

Same, i have thought about it, but when i actually think of the amount of times the boot is used to its full capacity is rare.

Thought about storage of a roof box to, again thats going to be a pain. My thinking is to hang it in the garage.....

Yes you can pack half your life into a Mig but it's OOF's fault i bought a cara pikey tin snail. At my first & second meet i decided tenting is too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter & a long drawn out process to put up/pull down. With a caravan you can keep the bulk of needed "stuff" in all year round & have plenty of time to add the last few bits & "boobs" before departure ie tinned food, clean bedding, crockery/cutlery, telly, radio/cd, heater fridge shower, fan for the summer, 3 point pins for your lappy etc, toaster, kettle, pots/pans, microwave & god knows what else. You can stop en route for a proper brew & when you get where you're going & it's peeing down you don't have to sit in a steamed up car waiting for an hour or two's work when & if the weather clears. Same goes when you leave.
I love my little van, cost me £200 & sits nicely on the front so no storage fees, & of course we all drive one of the best towing cars! :y

Caravans....
Living and working in a tourist area, they have always annoyed the hell out of me pootling about at 35mph stopping me getting to appointments and being oh-so-flashing-righteous when I have to overtake on a short straight and cut in because even though they are in no rush and could pull over to be courteous after fifteen miles, they don't  >:( >:( >:(  EVERY DAY  >:( >:( >:(

i like the sound of rain on canvas...(or other man made material). And i can get beer and pizza from the bouncy castle...and they have showers and even a bath in the castle...And the miggy can go full speed fully laden up the m74...Full speed.
A "tintent" would need to have some extra advantage for me.
How do you park that tin thing in a supermarket? and how much to insure it?...
i love my tent.
