Post by: elmo on 01 December 2009, 20:46:46
2.5td or 2.2 dti whats the better in your opinion?
have a 2.5td (340k) damaged beyond economical repair never let me down never missed a beat and she still runs (hydrauliced her up in floods 2 years ago and she still came back to life against the wise AA recovery advice :) )

am still looking for another to replace her so thought id ask a question which may have some usefull input have been looking for another 2.5td tbh facelift model but cdx/elite spec and must be manual there pretty hard to find so far ive found but the dti well there is lots available

Firstly how is your TD damaged?

After using the TD you'll find the DTi underpowered for the size of the car. Facelift TD's come up frequently but you have to keep an eye out for the rarer manuals especially in CDX/Elite spec. Took me ages to find my CDX manual saloon.

Yup, never had an auto bolted on. Only ever driven a chipped 2.5 TD's can't comment on the 2.2 DTi.

A chipped 2.5 TD goes well though!  :)

2.2 DTi produces more torque than a standard 2.5TD ;)

As Kevin recently educated me, a 2.2 DTi produces the same torque as the 3.2 V6, but does not exactly match performance.  ::)

2.5 TD has more horses, and on paper (without being chipped) is faster than 2.2 DTi

I never said it didn't and yes the DTi's were only ever manual (not the small spanish waiter type either ;D ;D)

trading paint :) wing to 1/4 pannel inc both doors sill pushed in just a uneconomical repair if she was newer with less miles i would throw some tlc at her and do the work but not being nasty to her shes 14 years old 340k on her and has a nice battle scar shes not worth it, still drives and starts and she will stay with me incase i do get another td (will provide some good spares im sure :) )

the main reason im asking is ive read some bits and bobs about the dti's with fuelpump faliure etc , apart from the noisey chain on the td i never once had a problem

you sure about that?
I know i have played with my td for a few years and yes it does go well, BUT my 2001 DTI manual estate is a severe let down power wise!!! it is just not a powerful or as smooth, it is nice to drive however, !!and drives far better thanm ine, but just dont have the silky smoothness of me td,
in fact so much so that im considering selling it!! in spite of its spec being everything i want !! i,e leather aircon heated seats etc etc and A GEORGEUS colour!! it just doesent float my boat! plus its sat in swindon and im sat in spain!!lol
havent been able to comment on the dti before but in my humble opinion the td is a better engine but the dti facelift drives better !!

Yep you can decat them & nothing can be done. Makes it more lively & free reving, i noticed right away. Better MPG too.
She just went through the MOT with flying colours :y

The MOT on a diesel is a visual smoke test, i've not had a cat on my Rover diesel for years and never had a problem :y

So they don't stick the gas sensor thingy up the pipe ::)(sorry it's late and I can't think of the proper name) on the diesel.
