Well had the Focus TDI just over a month wife tells me to take it today as it needs fuel, like a t***er i go and put petrol in, only 15 quids like.
Leaves petrol station gets about a mile runs like crap, switches engine off realises what ive done then get mate to tow me back to office.
Whats the next step guys and have i done any long term damage.?
TIA >:(
-
Father in law did it several times too an escort van,
pumped it out, and refilled with diesel and was always ok.
the petrol / diesel mix was fed a bit at a time into his v6 cav....it didnt complain either ;D
-
Were do i get a pump from then guys?
Or is there another way to drain the tank, should add that the little red light was on before i put the petrol in :(
-
I'd second that, drain it off and refill with diesel, personally though I'd chuck it, diesel oil in the petrol in any quantity might foul the plugs, burnt carbon in the head, to feed it in in little enough amounts to not make any difference you might as well throw it...just my twopenneth....twopenneth from Kenneth.
-
I would undo the fuel line near the fuel filter and turn the ignition on, you'll need a few containers though ;)

£15.00 is just under 3 gallon. Fill it right up it with diesel. It'll be ok. Truckers used to mix a gallon or so in their diesel tanks in winter to help stop it waxing. We don't have that problem nowadays

Syphon it out with a piece of garden hose...you will probably get a mouthfull though.

http://myfordfocus.com/how-to/fuelfilter.htm
Is this any help?
-
Had a look at that ken cheers,
Think im going witht the consensus and brimming it with diesel and giving it a good blast through, shes due a service in the next couple of weeks so will change all the filters then.
Might even put some injector cleaner through it if you think it might help?
-
Up to you, but the concemtration is much higher in your focus fuel tank than these truckers mentioned, a gallon or so in a tank holding 50 to 100 gallons, as against your 3 gallons in a tank that holds about 12 to 15 gallons! I'd drain it.
-
If it were mine I'd brim it... Don't bother with injector cleaner though... The petrol will do that ;) ;) ;)
Be realistic... £15 is less than 3 Gallons at most places... The tank will be 11 Gal (At a guess) so brim it, run down a bit, brim it again and keep repeating for about £30 or so. It may be a little rough for the first one but will improve. Oh... And it'ss probably smoke like a 100/day smoker for a short while ::) ::) ::) But then don't all smelly oil burners :-X :-X ;D ;D

Working tomorrow so will bring axel stands in to get under tank and undo fuel line near the filter. Anything else i need to do?

Easiest way is to either lift the back seats or boot carpet there will be an inspection plate for the fuel pump and level indicator undo that lift out the pump then sython from there saves knackering the pump from the lack of oil in the fuel ;)

Will have a look for that in the morning just hope it warms up a bit :)

gonna have my kenneth,i would drain it given the amount you put in and what the mix would be if you brimmed it.the days of the ole cavs and escorts that would put up with it are gone in my opinion the modern engine has too many sensors and ecu,s and electrical contacts(sensor to computer detect petrol, computer"oooh scream like a girl and shutdown shutdown limp mode"then yer crawl around till yer replace a diode at£946.26 which all it did is control speed yer blinker flashed at >:( >:(
bloody ell i went on there abit didnt i ;D ;D ;D

Well no joy with syphoning the stuff out cant get pipe in tried to drain from below and can't get the nut off that i want to release filler pipe, looks like its Nationwide and their fabulous offer of 180 quid to drain it and clean the pipes.
Just what i need the week before xmas, no PS£ for me now :'( :'(
-
There is another option as a very last resort, if the fuel pipe between the fuel filter and pump is flexible rubber, you could cut it to allow the pump to pump the fuel out into a container, then put a piece of copper or alloy tubing in between the cut section to re-join it, clamp it with jubilee clips.
-
I say chuck a couple of jerrycans of diesel in it, get it to a garage and brim it. The fuel system has been sitting with petrol in it now, so the damage (if any - unlikely) is done IMHO.
Kevin
-
Just fill it up with diesel dont pay £180 before Xmas or at any time :y
-
Got it sorted guys had someone come out with an electric pump thing cost 150 :( bit of a pi**er week before and all that but hey ho won't make the same mistake again.
If it was my car and not the wifes i would have just brimmed it and run it through but she didn't seem that keen.
I said can we afford it and she said yes, which means either im getting FA for xmas or shes been stock pilling cash i don't know about ;D ;D
-
Glad to hear you've sorted it, bit of a pain forking out that sort of money for it, but as you say, you're not likely to make the same mistake again.
-
Such is life Ken as i said if it was only worth a few hundred quid would have risked running it but at a few grand i feel it was worth is just looks like the mig will have to wait till next payday for some new tyres ;D
-
did the same thing a few months ago - #10.00 petrol into astravan - so filled up with diesel , then kept topping up for the next few days( 600 miles) - no problems at all - normally green pump into green car , black into van

Ran a '36 Austin 12 on paraffin during the petrol shortage in '56. Started on petrol then ran, well walked, on paraffin. Don't recall any serious difficulties, apart from avoiding PC49. ;D ;D ;D
