Title: lucky or what
Post by: The Red Baron on 23 December 2009, 15:28:20
further to my post in help section about rattling v6.
the cam timing was way out, drivers side(outer) cam 5 teeth out, well i thought i was doomed. however, fitted a new belt kit & tensioners & fired her up. Well it ran :o no missfire, rattled for a bit until the lifters got happy again but all seems ok apart from the egr gasket has blown.think i will be blanking that off now anyway. so im happy again now. :y

As the cams go at 1/2 engine speed thats 300 rpm for that cam ...  thats 5 revs /second, if you ran it for 12 seconds ... long enough to hear the problem, register it, switch off,  thats 60 cycles.

I believe you said just one cam out, so that's 6 valves per cam ... so if the valve and piston met each valve gets hit 60 times .....   :(   thats 360 "strikes" .......

More than enough impacts to do some serious damage I'd have thought .......

So .. you was very lucky IMHO  ....  :)

Exactly... It only takes 1 hit to bend a valve ;) ;)

not ran it for around 3 weeks, fired up no probs, after a minute or so it all went tits up, swithed off immediatly.

Still 5 times a second, given camshaft/crankshaft speeds........   ;D

edit as others beat me to it!!    ;D   ;D   ;D   8-)

Appreciate that, which is what the 12 seconds was based on .. ok . perhaps it only took you 6 seconds to register the noise and switch off .. thats still 180 hits in total, 60 per cylinder !!!

It all depends on which direction the timing was out.
Exhaust cam.... so it can be advanced wrt the crank for quite a long way before problems occur but can only be retarded (late) by 2 teeth (ish) before the valves fail to get out of the way of the ascending piston.
