Title: I`ve done my first cam belt
Post by: Markie on 19 June 2007, 12:52:38
.....but maybe it doesnt count as it was a 4pot Vectra  :-/

You may remember Mrs Markies car broke down, had it recovered home and stripped it down yesterday....

Quick PM to Marks DTM confirmed the suspected water pump was timing belt driven - unlike the Omegas. So didnt drive it. She was actually stationary and idling when this happened and turned the engine off immediatley - had she been driving i suspect the head would have been FUBAR.

When I peeled the cam cover back i established the waterpump was in two bits ( the propellor part had completley sheared off. The timing belt was also almost completely off and was out by 7 teeth!! Took some pictures and will upload them later for your perusal.

I reckon one start of the engine would have seen the whole thing off..

So im feeling pretty chuffed as the whole job was done in an afternoon and the car sounds sweet now.

I am rather embarrased to say that i had noticed a rattle from the front of the car over the past month and had not investigated it - obviously now as it happens it was the water pump dying a slow death  :-[

So moral of the story - well theres two actually - If i can do a belt ANYONE on here can  :y and if you hear a funny noise ALWAYS investigate it, Before its too late  :y

Good man,

Once you've done a couple, you'll be doing them with your eyes shut...

Well done Mark :y

BTW, how's things going with the green beast? I saw on one of your threads that you now suspect the leads as there is still a slight misfire following the dispack change. :-?

Jeez that's so weird as I never had any misfire problems with it :-? - my bet is on the leads as the plugs were only changed a few months ago when it had a major service.

Yeah much better thanks Mark, my speed didn't come down below three figures on the way home from the Lakes and the computer read 24.8 MPG :y.

Thanks for sorting it for me, I will try and find the air leak this weekend

The green beast or SWMBO??????????? She wants to take more water with it ::) Seriously well done on the belt change, bet you felt like you could take on the world when you turned the key and it ran. It's a great feeling when you have had something in bits and then end up with a complete motor again. Top marks Markie  :y
