Title: Left Hand Drive
Post by: Steve Webb on 27 December 2009, 17:46:33
Hi guys,

I really want to get hold of a left hand drive manual omega for the £300-£500. Anybody know if it's possible to buy them over here. I assume it would be an Opel. if not an omega then any car really in that price range. Any help you could give me would be fantastic.

cheers.

As someone living in Spain put off by the high secondhand price of LHD Omegas outside the UK , I would say your chances of getting something for that price in the UK will be about nil!

You could try specialist dealers in left hand drive cars in the UK. Do a search on google Uk as there are a number of them.

Don't forget that when you get the car back to wherever you live it will have to be road legal in that country after so long (reg plates, local tax and MOT plus whatever other costs). Of course if it is in the UK then you might as well look for a RHD but even then there won't be many manual Omegas at that price.

Good luck with the hunt. If you find two I will have the other one!

I don't know where in the UK you are, but you can try talking to these people:

Don't be put off by the expensive motors on display at their website, I pass their forecourt often and the do have quite a few older examples....

ANY left hooker over here is going to cost you (f**k knows why), and any car (left or right hand drive) costing £500 is simply £500 worth of grief IMO.

Omega's outside the UK and across Europe will hold their value better. So you will end up paying more. Mine for example will fetch around £2,500. UK value is what probably £800?

Omegas are very well respected outside of the UK and seen as a quality German car, so hold their value well compared to the UK where small or premuim badge cars are more fashionable and big "non-prestige" badged cars fetch nothing.  It's great for us buying an Omega in the UK!  That being said, the whole Opel brand is more attractive which could explain it....dives in a trench to avoid site warfare.....

We would love a LHD estate, but they sell for a big premium here due to rarity and they do load the insurance premium too.

It seems many Brits want a cheap motorway cruiser to take to their second home or to do regular trips across Europe and with the rarity, prices are pushed up due to demand over supply  :(

We looked at various LHDs- A6, 940 etc, but our Omega was the best choice at the cash, even in RHD.

I could light the touch paper and say let's all drive on the right, but it's been done to death  ;D

Spot on  :y

Paid sod all for an X registered MV6 over here a few months back, fixed the gearbox "fault" (dodgy electrical connector), and took €3,200 for it in Chiche (France) from an ex pat.

By the time my "expenses" (export cert, ferry, etc) were taken in to account, I cleared £2000 tax free on the deal.
