Title: Snow and ice
Post by: N61AOP on 27 December 2009, 11:12:39
Oh well, we've just had 4 days of snow and ice and my 2.2 auto Omega has behaved impeccably. I was a bit concerned about how it would handle, but I have to say it has to be the best car I've ever had for winter driving (with the possible exception of my previous Omega which was a 2.5 manual). Our 18 month old FWD Zafira refused to go up the lane at the back of our house and slid about all over the place, but my trusty Omega never put a foot wrong. Progress eh? ;D

combination of autobox delivering the power very smoothly, and RWD, allowing you to steer when you loose traction.  :)

Manual Omegas without TC are shite in the snow as i found out  ;D

TC in snow/ice is a waste of time anyway, mainly because TC (and ABS come to that) can only function correctly if the rubber can find something to grip in the first place.

I found it would grip, but then loose it straight away, as it pushed the slush out the back, but straight away brought more slush in. I found it easier down my road which had fresh snow, but that slush was a pig to get traction on. Stopped for 75L of traction juice, that helped  ;D

Some years ago I drove a Ford Scorpio (Granada) down a road, and had to take a right turn because straight ahead was a cul-de-sac. It was icy and in spite of turning the steering wheel the car drove straight on into the cul-de-sac, the brakes being useless of course.... very eery. Luckily the car slowed to a halt just before the end of the cul-de-sac without hitting anything. Which was good as it wasn't actually mine, it belonged to my boss...   :-X

The trusty Scorpio messed up.  ;D I used to have one of those.

Not found my 2.2 manual very good in the snow; a small hill I couldn't go up was no problem at all in our Picasso. Could be my tyres I suppose, got Kumho's on the rear, Nankangs on the front. :-/

Evening guys
Firstly, merry chirstmas happy new year to you all, after nearly a week and a half of 2 inchs of snow and black ice in wellingbrough its now disappearing..... hold on more is due on wednesday bl...dy hell.
I must say that my mig was a pig in the snow, had to souce winter tyres after melting the goodyears, its a auto so has snow button, no good, traction off as well, unable to move with these on, i thought the snow button locks the box in second until you reach about thirty and it disengages, I had to pull the trusty citreon ax out one night for work, no problems and with two hills to climb, don't  laugh  ;D ;D but it gave me no trouble at all,   take things easy guys have a good new year  :) :)

I had no issues with the Meega, Cav or Citroen Relay.  Admittedly, the snow here wasn't terrible.  Ice on the other hand!

I hate to say it though, my Mothers '06 Renault clit 1.6 Auto was stunning in the weather conditions.  TC worked much more effectively than the Meega.

Best all round has to be one with Autobox and TC, the Snow button is also a great assist when it is really bad.
Would not change for anything else seeing as how I have seen 4x4s struggling while I go blithly on. There again, how many have these 4x4 tractors when they can't drive them as they ought to be. Must be the old 'look at me' syndrome. More money than sense!
GudLuk,
Stay with your MIG, it won't let you down if you keep it in good nick.

my estate is a waste of time in the snow, just the slightest hill and it refuses to get me up it. I got stuck on a busy dual carriage way last week, holding up alot of cars :o thing is with a number plate saying SYD everyone would know it was me so with a gentle rocking and a large amount of dog biscuits under the  I got it up and home :D :D :D :D I then kept the xmas supply of 6, 15kg sacks of biscuits in the boot for weight and grip if needed. Just glad the snow melted as the dogs ate their way throught the food :) :)
