Started the car yesterday morn.
Sounded like a traction engine.
Switched off, diagnostics said missfire on No. 3 cylinder.
Checked the plug wells for oil/water - all totally clear.
Put it back together again.
Sweet as a bird.

maybe a loose connection and reseating resolved it

Once it's raised a misfire code it will cut the injector on that cylinder to protect the cat. As to why it decided that pot was misfiring - Hmm. :-/
Does it ever miss on startup?

Never misses a beat normally, even on a cold start.
-
It was cold yesterday morning B, perhaps it just didn't feel like it :P ;D
-
Is it that time of the month?

did you take the plugs out? Only time i had a miss-fire was when a plug destroyed itself, did as you describe, stop and start would be fine, but it then started mis-firing when on idle, then never stopped ;D
When i took the plug out both electrodes were missing :o
I'd see if one of the electrodes is about to fail....
-
similiar happened to me 2 years ago..
disconnected most of the electrical sockets , cleaned the dirt, mud,oil etc , after no problem..

If you knew AA's car you'd know it doesn't have any of those anywhere near it ;D ;D

Yep. Well worth checking the plugs just in case.

Plugs are only about 6 months old, 3K, but will check.

Highly unlikely unless you've got a dud, I'd say.
I would also try wiggling the connections to the coil pack and injectors while it's running, just in case something's loose, although I would expect the ECU to have stored an additional code if anything went open-circuit.
Strange, as you say. An aptly named thread. ;)

Whats the history on your coil pack, can't remember if you changed it? Take that out and take a look, mine had burn marks on it :o i decided to replace it.

Plugs 'look' fine.
Coil pack also 'looks' fine.
Hasn't missed a beat since.
Only code that came up was the missfire one.
