Hi all,
Just got a renewal for my breakdown cover from AA for £58 which is the basic of the basic cover so doesn't seem great value.
However, I NEED cover for me as a person, rather than the car as it's to go on two cars.
Anyone any recommendations at all?
Cheers,
James

buy through quidco, or cashback kings....can be virtually free :y
-
just renewed our AA, £99 last year for both of us, this year they want £158 for some reason, phoned up to cancel, and haypresto...£99 for another year. WTF?
Its one of those cover the driver jobs no matter what car your in. Thought that was ok at 49.50 each???
-
RAC did the same to me. Hiked it after a year or two. I'd also changed my credit card anyway, so they weren't going to be taking any money. ;D
I just kept quiet to see how many grovelling letters I got. ;D
Ought to get some more cover I suppose. Just riles me when the Westfield is covered anywhere in Europe for 30 odd quid a year. >:(

I've been with the AA since 1970, but when renewal comes in a few months .. I'll be going to Green Flag.
AA prices have just got stupid ... I used to get a bit off for being in the Armed Forces, even with that they were expensive .. without it .... :(
They have also changed their rules .. without any announcements ... used to be that if you were towing and the towed article (trailer or 'van) broke .. they would recover it .. I actually had this done many years back when a 'van had a serious problem, van was put on a flat bed ... but no more .... trailers not covered .. :(
So I'll be changing .....

i got cought out with green flag, Direct line offered break down cover as part of my insurance, didnt realise the level of cover was to any repair garage within 10 miles radious, fat lot of good that is at 11.30.pm on a friday with a dead alternator in the midde of London. And green flag where happy to leave me there as well, imagine the parking fees in London over a weekend, a mamaged to blame the salesperson for miss selling and they towed me home on a flat bed, they also dont own any vehichles, just a contract with a nationwide independent network of breakdown companys. Not impressed tbh.

I've been with the RAC for years, never had a problem. Having said that I've only ever had to use them for two flat batteries and a flat tyre (when I didn't have the wheel brace in the car?? ::))
-
I dont rate Green Flag.....they are not interested in thier customers.....and I have had a BAD experience with them!
-
My AA is due. Price hiked as per every year. Time to ring up and cancel, until they offer me the web price (£91 - 2 people, relay)

the drivers are merely the sort of people that turn up when the police call a tow truck to an accident to tow a wreck, not trained in roadside repairs in any way, i got the impression the company that recovered me work straight out of a scrap yard, you get what ever ludite they have on shift, and he spent the entire trip home bemoaning direct line, quite justifiably iirc....that reminds me, must change my insurance company.

How about paying for cover for 12 years with them and when you return to your car at 2 in the morning at Birmingham airport with a 1 year old and 3 year old to find the battery flat and then be told by the controller that your not covered because its classed as 'home start'....and that it will cost 120 quid and your not a priority!
Plus it was the first time I had ever tried to use them!

Ive had a few flat battery’s at Airports in the past Mark , Always had free jump start from the Car Parking people, been told thats included as part of your parking fee. I know at Stanstead if they cant get you started they call AA / RAC to recover or tow you out, but only to the outer Airport perimeter.
Back on track, Ive always found AA works well for me, £89 for me any car Im in plus relay to Garage or Home, no Home Start though.

Yeh, all well and good if thier booster pack is not goosed (as was in this case)

i am with the ADAC, German version of the AA. Its £70 a year, and it covers you for driving in Europe. I got silly quotes for just 1 weeks cover in Euroland, basically if a break down anywhere in main land Europe i am covered.
-
I have been a card carrying member of the AA on and off for 40 years, their annual fee is at least about £60-70 depending on which services are covered (home start, relay, roadside) and it has been worth every penny - they have got me out of a lot of scrapes - blocked carb jets, faulty distributor, jammed locks etc. and have always been there pretty quickly. As a member you are covered whichever vehicle you happen to be driving. Obviously when you first join you will be qualified for an introductory offer, then on to normal rates.
wouldn't go out without my yellow card 8-)

Only if you take that option ;)
(I have to take that option, as both of my cars are over 10yrs old)

Hence I carry my own, and decent jumpleads when I park at the airport ;)

I've been an AA member since '96 and now get complimentary Home Start on top of Roadside and Relay.
However I will be checking the price this year as if it gets hiked then it sounds like the threat of cancelling does the trick to get the price back down again.
But I can't live without it purely because whenever I go away for a week/weekend in the UK the Omega takes that chance to break down.
I've had the crank sensor go when in the New Forest and the aux drive belt went last summer when in Worthing ;D.

DONT GO TO RAC THEY ARE COMPLETE COWBOYS!
My sister in law is still trying to get then to resolve a complaint from last summer. Her exhaust snapped in front of the rear box join. The patrol didnt jack up car put a repair section in uses 10 mm bolt to expand and used lump hammer on rear box causing that to leak around seams. the rear box was 6 months old and according to this moron rusted. His senior patrol came to inspect before xmas and shes still waiting for his report. probably trying to write!this is another of the insurance company freebies waste of money if you ask me cos its cost hea another rear box.
Rant over

Greenflag ok for me.
Used them only twice, infact twice in consecutive days, got me going both times.
Glowplugs packed up on the TD, so called them.
They said we can get you going (I didn't have fix at roadside) or tow you to the nearest garage or tow you home. That cover cost me £36 per year including recovery of car and caravan, of which I was towing at the time. I've upgraded my cover now still only £63 for comprehensive, which does include repair at roadside well anything that can be fixed quickly, towing caravan home or to destination.
They call it "Mayday" Greenflag really via the Caravan club.

Have been with the aa for about 10 years. They are expensive but you can always haggle them down when it comes to renewal. Last year the little'un got locked in the car whilst it was running and they came out quickly and opened the car. I remember thinking at the time it was well worth the membership. Other experiences are that they have always been able to sort you out and even put an extra earth connection on my dad's astra - g and it hasn't stalled ever since!

A green flag cowboy left me stranded in Wales, fortunately at the top of a hill, when the leak off pipes on my old Vectra perished and decided enough was enough... They got me tow started, unhitch and buggered off, before I had chance to pull away, at which point, the engine died (before I had shut the door), I ended up rolling down hill backwards around some of finest bends of Wales...
Green Flag again, with my old Mondeo failed to get my car started after the primer diaphram had split (didn't know at the time), they "pumped" the primer a few times, and couldn't get it going, said where do you want to take it too... I pumped the diaphram a few more times, asked for another jump attempt and funnily enough it started...

Ive got AA through my work cost £69 this year for the full package (fleet) only snag the cars covered no me.
surly the oof can try and get AA fleet and the members pay would solve this issue

Wouldn't use AA... On top of price they sent a service van out many years back when I rang up saying I'd broken an engine mount on a Metro (at 2300) and that took 2 hours, then left me waiting another 2 hours for recovery >:( >:(
Wont use RAC by choice (if I'm paying) because they regularly left people waiting 4-5 hours when I was working for the garage, then called us out and we got the earache >:( >:( I even started getting the job faxed over and took the fax along to prove it wasn't me keeping them waiting ::) ::)
Green Flag were the best in the Basingstoke/Alton area and most of that region but don't know now.
I'm actually with RAC at the moment as I get Full cover (including Europe for cars under 10 years old) with my bank account, although I'll take out better European cover if/when we go to Italy in September :y :y
