Post by: raywilb on 22 February 2010, 09:25:11
there is enough how to,s on changing a pollen filter. but i have a query regards changing an oil filter. my tractor has the wrong filter, its not the one for my car. i now have the right one but How much oil will i lose by loosening filter housing?. or does most of the oil drain into the sump. an oil change is not due yet. :)

Just the filter cartridge is wrong on your TD?  If so, no oil will come out when you remove the filter cap (assume you are not changing the entire filter housing).

Oh, and by the way, the TD can NEVER have enough oil changes! Remember, BMW state 4.5k miles max for the oil, though 3k is better for that engine :y

i was given the filter & 400mls hence it turns out to be the wrong cartridge. the one that needs replacing has a bigger bore & is about 20mm shorter than the correct one for my engine. thanks :y :y

You've probably been given a U25DT filter, rather than an X25DT jobbie.
If you're engine has the plastic-domed top to the filter-housing, (with hexagonal moulding on top), then it's an X25DT. Fram part number is CH5979ECO.

I place a carrier bag close-by and drop the filter into it - no mess then!

Don't go to Halfrauds either. They're 'knowlegeable' baseball-capped 'experts' claim that the X25DT engine doesn't exist!
