Title: Pug 406 HDi cambelt kit change
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 21 February 2010, 15:34:18
Has anyone here ever done a cambelt on a 2.0 406 HDi?

I've done one on the old 1.9 TD, but never a newer one.

I want to do one, ideally next Sunday - need to know if it's still a "DIY" job on these French cars...  ::) :y

From what i can see, the belt layout on the 406 1.9td is the same as the 2.0 hdi.

Isn't the 1.9TD an "indirect injection" setup, whereby the HDi is direct injetion.. and hence wouldn't have a mechanical injection pump powered by the cambelt?  ::) :-/  :D

Head gasket went, once I fixed that the camshaft snapped in two :o :o

Thought it was my fault until a friend who was a metalugist confirmed that there was an air bubble in the camshaft at the point of fracture........I also witnessed french quality control when I worked in a factory for a short while over there.  2 hour lunch break where you could drink a whole bottle of wine (supplied at the canteen) and then carry on working!  We were building the isolators for the tgv power lines  :o :o :o

Eurostar is fine, its the bolt on frog signaling bit that stopped them in the tunnel.

Admittedly it's the whole customer service experience that makes all the difference when something does fail. They truly have mastered the art of the ".. and that's my problem because?" attitude when you're stranded on the wrong side of the channel with a ticket that's printed in slightly the wrong colour ink. >:(

For that reason, the engineering might well be fantastic, but it's the boat for me every time. ;)

Hmm be careful James and check before you do it,
but the last HDI peugot i did required a hertz meter for the belt to be set properly!! and they aint cheap but without it being set with one the the belt isnt guaranteed against early failure!!
this was on an 806 2litre hdi but think they all the same :-/

Presumably that's to set the tension??

Thing is - I can't see many garages having one of those, so I may do just as well do make an edificated guess as to the tension myself...  :-/

tend to agree till i checked and all peugot/citroen/renault dealers have them as standard, and so do many specialists, reason being there is no set figure for tensioning them only the frequency!!!! hope it goes well James :y

I have found an excellent how-to on a Pug forum, and have spoken via PM to quite an experienced Pug mobile mechanic, who has given me what he describes as a "perfect method" for tensioning the belt.......  I think given the car's (relatively low) value, I'll take the chance, rather than get fleeced by a dealer  :y

If it was anything like the 1.9td you have to dismantle half the frickin engine bay just to get at the head.

The only good memory from ever working on that car was once when I slipped and cut my hand open.  It needed stitches so I went to the hospital and was directed to a room and told the 'docteur' would be there shortly.

It was summer so I was in shorts a tight hugging vest (I was buff back then due to playing semi pro rugby) and of course covered in grime.  The rather attractive lady docteur walked in, stepped out and shouted at the nurses "It's not my birthday is it?"

I burst out laughing, needless to say the stitching job was awful due to all the flirting, it left a bad scar.  I didn't leave the parking lot before getting a call on my mobile. That was a nice summer  :y
