Title: vauxhall vectra

my mate has a y reg 01 vectra 2.2 cd and he is getting a problem with his gears auto by the way it pulls well but refuses to go into top gear and the kick down seems to work some times and not other times could it be he needs to change his gearbox oil it is a little brownish any help will be great cheers
