Title: need little help on passat electric window

My girlfriend's family was comming for a weekend at my town and they got a faulty window on a 2000y VW passat, when they lovered it could't get it to go up and had to drive for 20 miles with the window fully down and it was pretty cold  ;D
I managed to get it up when they arrived by pressing up and down fast and pulling manually the glass upwards.
The window goes down normally, but when you press the button up there is a grinding metal noise and it stops almost immediately.
Anyoune got any ideas what is the problem???

Unfortunately  the mechanism is shot... Probably easiest to buy a motor/ mechanism combined and change it :y :y
