Title: A way forwards for the pesky HDi

Well the engine management light is still on. Symptoms include rough acceleration, and clattery diesel knock (pinking noise) / slight missfire only under load at low revs.

Having done some reading - I can see a very simple test for the injectors which I will do.

That is - connect up each injector leakoff, to a bottle, using a pipe, and run the engine - if any particular bottle fills with diesel more than the others - this indicates the faulty injector.

If there was one faulty, with too much leak-back, looks like this would also create a drop in rail pressure - which may well be what the code is.

I've also taken the engine cover off, and noticed some big clumps of Tar sitting around the cylinder head. I am guessing, that this would be caused by poor injector seating?

The injector clamps were nowhere near tight enough (now at correct 40nm) so not sure if this will help it seal properly or not. Otherwise - it's out with all the injectors for new seals. I may do that anyway - especially if I end up replacing a faulty one.

May as well do the basic, free tests first and see what arises - as I really, really don't want to pay pug nearly £60 for a monkey to read my codes  :-[

James how often do you get to oxfordshire? very close (8miles)from the boys residence? prob best on a weekend though?

damn meant to put an explanation!!! ok i have a mate (called little Graham) who is or was a master tech for peugot and although he is now a mechanic for the TVP he still has the complete computer analyser/code reader for peugot!!
now i dont know what charges now but it used to be less than half the main dealer price, and i wouldnt mind betting he could tell you what the fault is without even seeing the car!! I was working on an 807 2.0 hdi here which the dealer couldnt fix and i rang him and he explained what to do over the phone, result? the STealer here wanted £1300 to replace the entire loom because they thought it was at fault, and i fixed it with his help for 55!!!!
 i can email him and ask if he would look or even get his permission to give you his phone number if you like?

Omegatoy, you're a star as always.

Have had a slight stroke of luck.

Engine bay fuse was blown. Replaced this - and I can now talk to the car using ODBII / ELM327  :) :) :y

There were more codes stored than you could shake a stick at. 12 in total.

Ranging from cruise input faults, etc - through to more relevent ones - such as, fuel pressure incorrect (leak).

I cleared them all, and took the car for a spin, circa 80 miles.

the only one that came back was "clutch actuator incorrect signal"

So it doesn't look like it's logging any significant faults anymore.

I also changed the stat, so it's now getting up to temp.

I still get a clatter/pinking noise under load, but I suspect an injector, and will do a leakback test.

I will also fit a new cambelt kit and make sure that's all set up right.

If I get stuck though - I would gratefully accept the opinion of your friend - with thanks  :y

Did a leakback test tonight

Injector 1 - 550ml
Injector 2 - 600ml
Injector 3 - 600ml
Injector 4 - 600ml...

so injector 1 isn't supplying enough fuel? or are the other 3 wrong?

I would have thought no 1 was overfuelling :-/ :-/
