Ok, I bow down before his greatness....
Last week Mr smart arse looked at my Corsa, which I knew needed new track rod ends. Nope he announced, thats got play in the rack. Bow locks I thought.
So, today when doing the track rod ends in the sodding rain ( I can say sodding because I was sodden when I finished), I had to admit the play was all in the rack.
Now the fun bit. How do you get the rack off a corsa that has EPS (electric power steering)? You remove the subframe whilst you hold the engine and gearbox up with your engine crane. Well, i would if I hadn't sold it last week. :(
So, off to get a new engine crane tonight then do this job when the bloody weather brightens up in 2009.

Bit optimistic ::)

Pick up an aqualung while youre out. ;D

Makro have engine hoist 2 ton , with 8 ton lifting jack for £79.00 + VAT
Quality might be sh1t though.
-
Thats the one I just picked up. Didn't want to say earlier in case all you 'orrible lot cleaned them out.
Quality? Dunno yet, not as well built as the Clarke by thye looks of the box piccy, but who cares. Lift engine is all I want.
BLOODY heavy. Two boxes make up the 90kg of it. And, no I didn't try to lift it - not this week, I am suffering a bit. :(
Anyway, crane bought and I will do it as and when I get a chance. Steering knoicks lightly like a ball joint, so needs attention sooner rather than later. I will just not book tyhe car out from Sunday until I know it is done.
Subframe needs careful alignment afterwards, so I will be going back to proper engineering for this. It will be engineers blued, then scribed for reasonable accuracy. What a crap design this is though. Electric motor for the steering solumn, then a rack that is wedged between the subframe and the bulkhead.
Give me a Triumph herald with a 2ft steering wheel any day. |Even if you needed to change the rack on that, you just climb in the engine bay. There is LOTs of room in them. :y

Once... just once he could be just a little bit wrong! :-/
It would give the rest of us hope..... ;)

I've seen him get it wrong a couple of times, but sworn to secrecy :-X

There'd be lots of room in the corsa if you could lift the wings up with the bonnet ;)
-
Not hard to diagnose....jack a wheel up, feel for play and look to see what moves...
-
Interestingly the Corsa B used to advise that the subframe should be removed, you used to reach in and undo the bolts and feed the rack out through the wheel arch on them.
-
Doesn't look like enough room, but I am happy to be corrected. Interestingly, talking with Pete earlier and we came to the conclusion that the tie rods can be replaced and are likely to be where the play is. If so, it is a bloddy sight easier!
Anyone want a brand new engine crane? I'll see if Makro want it back..... :-?

Good car to learn in too, according to a mate of my father. Until it broke down on the morning of his driving test and he had to take it in a Vitesse instead! :o

My Herald wouldn't start on test. Examiner got out and we opened the front, he stuck hius leg in a kicked the starter, then it started! I passed first go (of course).
-
Right. Cancel the steering rack. Turns (pardon the pun) out that you can get the tie rod, with ball and socket to axial joint for £29 from VX. So, it is ordered.
Engine crane returned to Makro this morning - won't be needing that thanks!
I know this is all Corsa, but it is parked near an Omega, so that counts.
Still to do, that steering problem, then the two front wheel bearings and that's it. Oh, then a normal service etc, pads, oil, filters - you know.
-
At least you could have let one of us offer you 20 quid for the crane before you took it back :D
-
Well given that the the play was evident on both sides and me not being a great believer in coincidence (i.e. both sides failing the same amount on both sides simultaneously), I would still be checking the rack, I would certainly be popping the rack belows off and wiggling the wheel to see if there is any play in the inner track rod ends ......
Having said that, the tie rods are the known failure and the racks are generaly bomb proof so it may well be that.
-
Should have added, make sure you get the right ones as your car is right on the change over point (2004 model year)....
-
Yep, gone by chassis number
Are the PAS motor/columns the same? Nay have an idea here too.
